Algae on a turtle’s shell doesn’t mean it’s old or ancient. Most of the time, it just means the turtle hasn’t shed its scutes yet. Freshwater turtles shed the outer layers of their shell through a process called scute ecdysis. New keratin forms underneath, the old scutes loosen, and when they finally come off, the algae goes with them. This one clearly hadn’t shed yet and also had a pretty spicy attitude about the whole interaction. I’m not an expert. I just try to share and educate with what little I know because nature is beautiful, and protecting it, and bringing it back to what it should be, is on all of us. This common snapping turtle carries a body plan that’s been around for millions of years — a design so effective it barely needed changing. While people call them “living fossils,” they’re still evolving like everything else… they’re just proof that nature sometimes gets it right the first time. Snapping turtles are powerful, ancient reptiles that play an important role in freshwater ecosystems, even if they’re often misunderstood. Have you ever seen one in the wild? 👇 #reptiles #wildlife #carnivore #fossil #explore

🐢🐊 In the Slough, even the quietest moment tells a bigger story. This red-bellied turtle is moving from one water source to another along a trail carved by an alligator - one of nature’s great ecosystem engineers. As alligators travel, they create “gator trails” that connect ponds and wetlands. During dry times, these pathways can mean the difference between isolation and survival for turtles, fish, birds, and countless other species. One species builds. Many species benefit.🐊🐢 #turtle #alligator #wetlands #ecosystems #survival

The Alligator Snapping Turtle: Nature’s Master Fisher Meet the Alligator Snapping Turtle, one of nature’s most fascinating predators. Native to the rivers and lakes of the southeastern United States, this ancient reptile has a unique trick: it uses its tongue like a worm to bait unsuspecting fish. When the fish swim in, the turtle’s powerful jaws snap shut in an instant. 👉 Watch this video to see how patience, camouflage, and evolution combine to create one of the most extraordinary hunting strategies in the wild. #AlligatorSnappingTurtle #TurtleFacts #WildlifeWonder #NaturePredator #LingualLuring #RareSpecies Alligator Snapping Turtle

Snapping turtles are formidable freshwater reptiles native to North America, easily recognized by their rugged, prehistoric appearance and powerful, beak-like jaws. There are two primary species: the Common Snapping Turtle and the Alligator Snapping Turtle, the latter of which is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world, featuring a spiked shell and a unique worm-shaped lure on its tongue to attract prey. Despite their reputation for being aggressive, snapping turtles are generally docile while in the water; their "snapping" behavior is a defensive mechanism they use primarily on land, where they feel vulnerable because they cannot fully retract their large bodies into their relatively small shells. As vital members of their ecosystems, snapping turtles act as both predators and scavengers, helping to keep aquatic environments clean by consuming carrion, fish, frogs, and even aquatic plants. They are incredibly resilient and can live for several decades—sometimes over 100 years for the Alligator species—often surviving harsh winters by burying themselves in the mud at the bottom of ponds or slow-moving rivers. While they may look intimidating with their long, saw-toothed tails and sharp claws, they are a fascinating link to the era of the dinosaurs and play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of wetland habitats Disclaimer: I do not own the original video footage used in this content.
