NYHey, New York! Here’s a first look at @AMNH’s stunning new #GilderCenter. It opens May 4, and highlights include an insectarium and a vivarium that allows for the year-round display of the museum’s treasured butterfly exhibit, as well as a 360º immersive experience.
You should know:
🎟️ All tickets—including Member tickets, complimentary tickets, and pre-paid pass tickets—must be reserved online in advance of your visit
ℹ️ Entry to the Gilder Center is included with General Admission to the American Museum of Natural History. Additional tickets are required for the Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium and the Invisible Worlds immersive experience, which are free for Members. The Insectarium, Atrium, Library, and Collection Core are part of General Admission
💁🏾 Adult tickets start at $28. To see one special exhibition, the tickets are $34. To see all the special exhibitions, the tickets are $39. For NY, NJ, and CT residents, the prices start at $25. Yesterday, I revisited the @amnh ‘s Richard GILDER CENTER for Science, Education and Innovation in Manhattan’s Upper West Side in New York City. This new building includes a new insectarium, a butterfly vivarium with free-flying butterflies, a 360-degree immersive experience and a redesigned library. The building was designed by @studiogang, the international architecture and urban design practice led by Jeanne Gang.

I’m particularly lucky to have grown up in New York’s Hudson Valley and to get to rediscover it through a geological lens as an adult. Sometimes things might not look like much until you dig a little deeper and realize there’s a lot more to it than you initially thought.
Fun fact: my first ever geology walk I ever led was at the base of this mountain! With @dutchesslandconservancy 🤗❤️
The “something” that happened to thrust up this slice of basement rock was likely related to one of the several orogenies (mountain building events / tectonic collisions) that happened on the East Coast of North America over millions of years. It’s thought that the force of one (or multiple) of these collisions may have affected the earth’s crust over here and caused this “slice” of rock to detach and be forced up and over the younger rocks. Geologists also think that the area was probably covered with Triassic age sandstone for a while, but those were eroded away over millions of years and no longer present. What we see now is the result of erosion over millions of years which exposed the resistant slice of basement rock and turned it into this mountain in an otherwise flat-ish part of the county.
