EVI totally forgot to mention it here, but a few months ago I bought a new 20x objective for the metallurgical microscope. The microscope came with a 5, 10, and 50x objective, but I often found that the jump between the 10 and 50 was a bit too much.

This is a 20x Plan Achromatic objective for metallurgical microscopes. My microscope from Amscope has a rotating nosepiece that holds up to four different objectives. The base model is the ME580, more info on the microscope is linked on the “My Setup” page on my website, linked in my bio.

Oddly enough, Amscope doesn't actually sell this specific 20x objective as an accessory. They have other 20x objectives, but not this exact one, which matches the others on my microscope. I had to purchase it from a different website and it took over 30 days to arrive, which I feel is only because I sent an email asking where it was around the 3 week mark.

Here you can see lots of highly specialised cells, with some highly specialised functions, mostly for excreting different liquids inside the "gastric pits" you see here.

Four major types of secretory epithelial cells cover the surface of the stomach and extend down into gastric pits and glands:
Mucous cells: secrete an alkaline mucus that protects the epithelium against shear stress and acid
Parietal cells: secrete hydrochloric acid
Chief cells: secrete pepsin, a proteolytic enzyme
G cells: secrete the hormone gastrin

IMI finally managed to capture this... a springtail just walking on the water's surface tension as if it's solid ground.
It's not struggling at all, it's not "sticky" for it. I guess its incredibly low weight is a major factor, but the real trick must be its superhydrophobic cuticles. It's probably trapping a layer of air, so it's not even getting wet, just riding the tension. It's an amazing little piece of physics.
Got this shot using the Amscope B490B with the 20x plan objective and 10x oculars, recorded straight to my phone.
The clarity is pretty good, though tracking it while trying to focus was the main problem. This isn't just a random bug, it confirms how they've mastered their tiny niche.
These guys are a key part of the surface film... essential for any healthy paludarium setup for sure, nothing to be afraid of.

MICheck out this cool little animal called a Rotifer! This was the first time that I have found anything like it! This is also the first time I’ve used my microscope for something other than mushroom spores! 😂 🤷🏼♂️ Found it by mixing moss with water and then mounting the water! 🙌🏻 ❤️
