Patients with a suspected scaphoid injury will instinctively “clamp” the radial wrist by placing the thumb on the dorsal aspect and the index finger on the volar aspect, effectively gripping the anatomic snuffbox and localizing to the scaphoid. The anatomic snuffbox is a depression formed at the radial (lateral) side of the wrist when the thumb abducts and/or extends. Two tendons (that look like one because they run together in a common synovial sheath) become visibly apparent on the radial side. They are the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis. One tendon becomes visibly apparent on the ulnar side. It is the extensor pollicis longus. The anatomic snuffbox is a great landmark to find these tendons, as well as locating the scaphoid bone. The abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis are involved in deQuervain’s Syndrome, an overuse syndrome of the thumb. BTW, abduction of the thumb is a sagittal plane movement and extension is a frontal plane movement because of how the thumb rotated evolutionarily. 👉🏼Note how in anatomic position your thumb pad is oriented approximately 90 degrees differently than the pads of your other fingers. . ⚡️Check out LearnMuscles.com for more!
