Andrei Tarkovsky: «I never understood what cinema was. Many who entered film school already knew what cinema was. It was a mystery to me. Moreover, when I finished film school, I no longer knew what cinema was at all - I didn’t feel it. I didn’t see my calling in it. I felt that I had been taught some profession, understood that there was some trick in this profession. But to use cinema to approach poetry, music, literature - I didn’t have that feeling. I didn’t. I started shooting the film «Ivan’s Childhood» and essentially didn’t know what directing was. It was a blind search. I tried. I looked for some moments of connection with poetry. After this film, I felt that through cinema you could touch some spiritual substance. Therefore, the experience with «Ivan’s Childhood» was extremely important for me. Before that, I didn’t know what cinematography was at all. It still seems to me that it is a big mystery». From an interview, 1984.

Director Andrei Tarkovsky spent about a year shooting all of the exterior scenes. The first part of this shoot was done over the spring and summer of 1977 with cinematographer Georgi Rerberg, using a new Kodak 5247 film stock provided by movie producer Sergio Gambarov. However, after developing these negatives, they came back with an unwatchable shade of dark green. According to the film's sound technician Vladimir Sharun, Tarkovsky always claimed that the movie was sabotaged by one of his enemies, a "well-known Soviet film director": the Kodak 5247 stock was reportedly stolen, and ended up in the hands of this director, while Tarkovsky unknowingly got a regular Kodak stock in return that was then developed incorrectly. Sharun, however, attributed the problem on "the usual Russian sloppiness", as the Kodak 5247 was newer to Soviet laboratories at the time, who didn't know how to properly process it. The disaster proved to be the final straw for Rerberg, who got the blame for the incident and was released from the film, so Tarkovsky had to shoot most of the film again with a new cinematographer, Aleksandr Knyazhinskiy (only one shot filmed by Rerberg of a dust storm blowing over the marshes remains in the final film). This contributed to the film's two-part narrative structure. Allegedly, the newly shot footage strayed even farther away from the source novel 'Roadside Picnic', and had a different look. Asked about this, director Tarkovsky said "no mother gives birth to the same child twice." - 📽️: Stalker(1979) Dir. Andrei Tarkovsky

Andrei Tarkovsky: “I see the only meaning of human existence in the effort to overcome yourself spiritually, to become different from what you are at birth, in growing. If in that span, between the poles of birth and death, we manage to achieve this—even if it is hard and the advance is small—we will have served humanity.” Happy Birthday to Andrei Tarkovsky. Tarkovsky is a filmmaker who appreciated cinema. He made films that will challenge us and encourage spiritual and intellectual growth. Tarkovsky is, for me, a visionary of cinema. A real artist who not only provided life-changing experiences that I continuously think about, but an artist who valued artistic integrity over crowd-pleasing and making films just for money. The Mirror, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, is a deeply autobiographical and poetic meditation on memory, childhood, and the passage of time, where fragmented recollections drift between dream and reality rather than unfolding in a traditional narrative. The film moves freely between timelines, mixing childhood memories, historical footage, dreams, and personal reflections into a cinematic stream of consciousness that feels closer to remembering than to storytelling. One of its most haunting images shows waves moving through the crops outside a secluded cabin in the woods, the landscape trembling as if stirred by memory itself. To create the effect of wind rippling through the field, Tarkovsky had two helicopters land behind the camera and switch on their rotors when he wanted the wind to begin, using their blades to transform the crops into a living, breathing sea — a striking example of his dedication to capturing real elemental forces on film instead of relying on artificial effects. This obsession with physical reality was central to Tarkovsky’s philosophy of cinema. He believed film should “sculpt in time,” capturing the texture of real life: water dripping, fire burning, wind moving through grass. Throughout the film, the elements of nature — water, fire, air, and earth — recur constantly, giving the movie a dreamlike rhythm that feels both intimate and universal. The film also incorporates real poetry written and recited by Tarkovsky’s father, Arseny Tarkovsky, blurring the line between art and personal history. The same actress, Margarita Terekhova, plays both the protagonist’s mother and his wife, reinforcing the film’s themes of memory looping and collapsing across time. Rather than offering clear answers, The Mirror invites viewers to experience memory the way it actually feels: fragmented, emotional, and deeply subjective. Over time, it has come to be regarded as one of the most personal and influential works in world cinema — a film that turns memory itself into its central language. #TheMirror #AndreiTarkovsky #ArtCinema #FilmHistory #Cinephile

Andrei Tarkovsky // It is obvious that art cannot teach anyone anything, since in four thousand years humanity has learnt nothing at all. We should long ago have become angels had we been capable of paying attention to the experience of art, and allowing ourselves to be changed in accordance with the ideals it expresses. Art only has the capacity, through shock and catharsis, to make the human soul receptive to good. It’s ridiculous to imagine that people can be taught to be good...Art can only give food - a jolt - the occasion - for psychical experience #deadpoetswilde #andreitarkovsky

Andrei Tarkovsky's own comments about the film reflect how special the film was for him: "As I began work on Mirror I found myself reflecting more and more that if you are serious about your work, then a film is not the next item in your career, it is an action which will affect the whole of your life. For I had made up my mind that in this film, for the first time, I would use the means of cinema to talk of all that was most precious to me, and do so directly, without playing any kinds of tricks." - 📽️: Mirror(1975) Dir. Stalker had tragic consequences surrounding its production. Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, the movie was shot in heavily polluted industrial locations near Tallinn. The crew worked around toxic water and chemical waste with little protection. Years later, Tarkovsky, his wife Larisa, and actor Anatoly Solonitsyn all died from cancer, leading many to believe the filming conditions played a role. #stalker #andreitarkovsky

During the production of Stalker (1977–1979), Tarkovsky and many members of the crew worked for months in extremely polluted locations near the Jägala Dam in Estonia, downstream from a chemical factory. Here, the water and air were contaminated, and allergic reactions and health problems occurred multiple times among those present. To further complicate the shooting, the first version of the film had to be almost completely redone: the initial film reels developed in Soviet laboratories were ruined, making nearly all of the already shot scenes unusable. Tarkovsky therefore had to start almost from scratch, hiring a new cinematographer, Alexander Knyazhinsky, and facing extreme working conditions to complete his masterpiece. Anatoly Solonitsyn (actor in Stalker) died of lung cancer in 1982; years later, Tarkovsky and his wife Larisa (assistant director) developed the same disease. Some surviving crew members have linked these cases to exposure to contaminants at the shooting locations.
