LAIn theory, secularism means treating all religions equally.
But in practice, secularism has to be rooted in a country’s context and history.
In India, Muslims aren’t a small minority, they’re 14% of our population, more than the entire population of Bangladesh, and comparable to Pakistan.
They are a visible, diverse community with distinct language, dress, and culture.
After Partition, India’s secularism wasn’t just about “neutrality”, it was about reassurance and inclusion.
Dr. Ambedkar wanted equal rights for all women, but Nehru understood that the nation was still healing. The Hindu Code Bill was the first step toward reform, starting within the majority community to avoid further alienation.
That’s why India’s version of secularism allows personal laws for different communities, it’s not about being less secular, but about being contextually just.
Because secularism isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s shaped by history, demography, and social reality.
