I have always wanted to know more about the origin of my name, apart from the fact that I was named after my great grand mother Anyiko (mother of my Dad’s mum). My mum, brother, hubby and kids accompanied me to Anyiko (the village), the place my great-grandmother, Anyango Nyar Oguta (the mother of my Dad’s father) and her family originated from. We meet my great grandfather Paul Okono, from that side of our lineage. Jaduong’ is a nephew to great granny Nyar Oguta and he remembers her and the people of that time, very well, despite suffering a stroke. Sadly, he didn’t know much about my great-grandmother Anyiko and if her roots had direct ties to the place. Sadly, she passed away while giving birth to my grandmother, who grew up an only child and an orphan. But it was extraordinary to hear the old man recount 12-13 generations back 🤯 Jaduong’ also shared the history of Anyiko, now a sub-location. He explained that the Luo people of the Ugenya environs conquered the area, which was originally called Linyiko and inhabited by the Luhya community, during the reign of a Nabongo. Not yet certain which Nabongo it was, but I will confirm the details with Jaduong’. The old man recalls moments with my grandfather vividly and even says he has a photograph of my father as a newborn. Imagine that ⭐️ “If you give us a few days, we will be able to find it.” Jaduong’ is elated to learn that I was named Anyiko. It gets even more interesting: when we go 12-13 generations back, our fore most father from this lineage is Omollo Osiro, son of Puony. Anyiko Masiro, the place, was named after the legend of this Osiro. Wow! Jaduong’ also says that the land where Anyiko Senior School was built, was partly donated by our fourth generation family… my great x4 grand father was born on that land ✨ I have been on a journey of retracing my roots, piecing together stories and our lineage, like a jigsaw. And the deeper I dig, the more I discover just how strong, legendary, brave and generous my ancestors were. It explains so much. In understanding them, I am understanding myself better.
