WRThe passing of conductor-composer Laurie Johnson reminded me that back in the early days of lockdown in 2020 I began working on an idea for a podcast called Chasing Rabbits.
The idea was floated by @chriserror who suggested I turn my meandering Twitter threads into a podcast. We discussed an old thread where I’d shared my discovery that actor Al Matthews aka Apone from Aliens had another career as a disco singer, and I set about writing a kind of unfolding stream of consciousness where I head down a rabbit hole of niche info and fun facts with an aim to claw my way back out, bringing the story full circle.
5 episodes were written but I only demoed one. The Clarke Peters Situation, as you can hear from the clip, opens with me watching an episode of The Professionals which sparks a Google frenzy which takes in disco, free jazz, uk gospel radio, Skin from Skunk Anansie, John DeLorean and America’s war on drugs.
I demoed a ska version of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane for the theme tune. It had promise, but while I was looking for a vocalist, suddenly Prince Fatty released a reggae version. Great minds, etc.
The overwhelming uncertainty of the pandemic coupled with a gracious “no thanks” from Clarke Peters when I asked him to guest on the podcast led to me thinking twice about the whole idea. Listening back, I sound remarkably jovial considering the world felt like it was collapsing at the time. I also don’t know why I sound like I’m crossing all my t’s and dotting all my i’s, but anyway, the Laurie Johnson track ‘Sleuthing’ in the background here is great.
Huge respect to Laurie who perfected the sound of roll neck sweaters, full ashtrays and casual violence on UK telly.
