💔 Our Story: Fighting Appendix Cancer 💔 On February 26, 2024, my husband went to the ER with nonstop abdominal pain. We thought it was a burst appendix. But when they opened him up, they found tumors spread across the lining of his abdomen. It was Stage 4 cancer. At first, we fought his diagnosis with hope. We trusted medicine and treatment plans. We believed that doing everything “right” would lead us back to a normal life. At first, we were told it was colon cancer with peritoneal metastasis. Later, we learned it actually started in his appendix—appendiceal cancer. There is a difference. Even though both can involve the peritoneum, the origin matters—it affects treatment, prognosis, and which specialists should be involved. This rare cancer is often misdiagnosed, and even colonoscopies can appear normal. Symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, bowel changes, and blood spotting can mimic other digestive issues. Some key facts: • Appendiceal cancer affects ~1–2 people per million per year • Over 50% of patients are diagnosed at Stage 4 • Colonoscopies often do not detect appendiceal tumors • Specialized centers with HIPEC + cytoreductive surgery improve survival outcomes • Many community hospitals may see zero cases per year My husband fought harder than anyone I’ve ever known. He never gave up hope, never wanted a prognosis, and fought for our son every day. Nutrition, holistic care, prayers, pleading, and love were never enough to stop the disease, but we did everything we could, including TPN during his final months. I share this story with his consent—not for likes, sympathy, or clout—but to honor the strongest man and the best dad I have ever known. I want our son to know how proud he should be of his dad. If sharing this saves another hero, another widow, or another child from losing their best friend, then it is worth it. Right after our amazing family trip to Roatan, Mitch needed to get his appendix out (unexpectedly, obviously). It forced us to cancel another, longer trip we’d been planning for months. We are so incredibly thankful that this happened in between trips so that he could rest at home in a comfortable, familiar place. It has really reinforced the importance of making sure we are prepared for the worst when traveling, especially since we’re always traveling with little kids. I’m going to be more proactive about bringing medications we might need and knowing all of the urgent cares/emergency rooms while traveling ahead of time from now on. This is something we definitely should have been already doing but since we’re rarely sick it didn’t really occur to me and now we know better.

But that was the easy part. My digestive tract hit a dead-stop - Ileus. The plumbing backed up. Acid reflux became a fire. Then came the NG (nose-to-gut) tube. Four attempts. Four times feeling like I was being stabbed in the sinuses and choked simultaneously due to a deviated septum from years of martial arts. 🥊👃 I was ready to say “F this,” but the surgeon finally cleared the path. THE LESSONS 1️⃣ SPEED IS SOVEREIGNTY: If it’s appendicitis that requires surgery, advocate for surgery ASAP. Minutes matter. 2️⃣ NEVER GO ALONE: Even the best hospitals miss things. You need an advocate to ensure you aren’t neglected or “forgotten” in the system. 🛡️ 3️⃣ THE NARCOTIC TRAP: Narcotics are the ultimate “Emergency Brake” for your gut. Get off them the second you can to get your motility back on track. I’m finally home. The road back to 100% starts now.
