LIStepping out of the comfort zone 😬
Performing to Arabic songs that aren't regularly used for gigs, aren't mahragan or pop, and songs that have complex arrangements and lyrics - it's a scary thing 😁 I still haven't been able to truly let go infront of an audience and improvise the way I improvise alone to these types of melodies.
It's bizzarre - if I have to get up and improv a fusion piece, I wouldn't even think about it, I'm almost too comfortable with it. But performing to complex Arabic music is still a challenge that presents many possiblities for improvement and growth.
Maybe someday soon I will edit and upload the full video of my dance to Ana Bastanak 😁 For now, I'm sharing a part from the beginning (and maybe one of my fav parts of the song).

IMThe Hajaa Dance is a traditional Iraqi 🇮🇶 dance, is 6,000 years old it was practiced as sumerian religious rituals it deeply rooted tribal culture of southern Iraq especially among women. It is known for its powerful, expressive movements and is often accompanied by rhythmic drumming and ululation (zaghareet).
One of the most striking elements of the Hajaa Dance is the use of the dagger (khunjar) by women during the performance.
It represents
Strength and Bravery: Holding and dancing with a dagger shows that the woman is strong, fearless, and proud of her roots.
Protection of Honor: In tribal culture, women are often seen as the keepers of family honor. The dagger reflects their role in preserving that dignity.
Symbol of Heritage: It connects the dancer to her ancestral traditions, where the dagger was both a tool of defense and a ceremonial object. While the dance is feminine and graceful, the dagger introduces an element of boldness and cultural identity, making the Hajaa Dance both a celebration of womanhood and a tribute to strength and resilience.
رقصة الهجع رقصة عراقية تقليدية 🇮🇶، متجذرة في الثقافة البدوية والقبلية في جنوب العراق، مايقدر قبل 6,000 سنه بين السومريين وكانت جزء من الطقوس الدينيه وكان يمارسه النساء. تشتهر بحركاتها القوية والمعبرة، وغالبًا ما تكون مصحوبة بإيقاعات الطبول والزغاريد.
من أبرز عناصر رقصة الهجاء استخدام النساء للخنجر (الخنجر) أثناء الأداء.
تمثل الهجاء القوة والشجاعة: فحمل الخنجر والرقص به يدل على قوة المرأة وشجاعة وثِقتها بجذورها.
حماية الشرف: في الثقافة القبلية، غالبًا ما تُعتبر المرأة حامية شرف العائلة. ويعكس الخنجر دورها في الحفاظ على تلك الكرامة.
رمز التراث: يربط الرقصة الراقصة بتقاليد أجدادها، حيث كان الخنجر أداة دفاع ووسيلة احتفالية. في حين أن الرقصة أنثوية ورشيقة، فإن الخنجر يقدم عنصرًا من الجرأة والهوية الثقافية، مما يجعل رقصة الحاجة احتفالًا بالأنوثة وتكريمًا للقوة والمرونة.
