One of the biggest myths that I hear as a building’s archaeologist (although one day I’ll get started on the ship’s timbers one…) is that adzes were used to square building timbers in medieval Britain (and west of Europe- for other areas, these are outside my area of knowledge). I would like to show you the marks made by certain tools so that you can identify this yourself. Despite the impracticalities of using an adze for hewing, the marks that we find on timbers are predominantly made by axes. This is also shown in all the contemporary literature and art. Although I’ve found marks of adzes, they’ve usually been in specific areas, such as for curves, joints, or in one 19th century example, redressing the back of a timber. Although this may be the case for many places, for people who have worked with adzes, I’d be curious to know how many square metres you are able to hew per day consistently. #axe #adze #craft #oldhouse #history
