JABit of inspiration for the start of the New Year!
When I first encountered the idea of becoming an archivist I was told by my academic advisor at university that I should drop the idea and focus on ‘a more attainable career path.’ They cited the lack of opportunities within the sector and the level of experience required to even become a qualified archivist.
And like the good student I was I decided to completely ignore what they said and work towards becoming an archivist. I will not pretend it has been an easy journey, getting into the heritage sector is a real challenge and there were plenty of obstacles that I had to overcome. But I can look back at that journey and be proud of myself for managing to make it into the archival sector, and I still have room to grow within the profession.
I think when people discuss goals for the year it’s easy to talk down your desires as unobtainable, especially when we talk about a career in heritage. But it’s important to remember that denying yourself the opportunity to work in a field you feel passionate about is to deny yourself the ability to share your passions. So although you may encounter many roadblocks on your journey, it’s important to keep going because you may then reach the role you had longed for!
