This is incredibly important, your portfolio is a reflection of yourself and your work ethic. I’m not saying that your first-year portfolio is going to be amazing; however, it will provide you with a blueprint on how to improve as an architect, and at the same time, can be good for applying for internships.
Participated in competitions:
Competitions are amazing, they serve a lot for you to practice for actual projects without having your professors telling you what to do, a lot of competitions are free and can be an amazing opportunity for you to both train your skills and put your name out there
Improved my communication skills:
Architecture school DOES NOT teach you how to do business. What most people never talk about is that, at the end of the day, architecture is a contract-based industry, and knowing how to sell your ideas, yourself, and your firm is incredibly essential to your success in the field. So work on your business skills, not just technical ones.
Understood the ways I could use my degree: Yes, architecture school is perfect if you want to be an architect (duh..), however, once you realise that an architecture degree can serve in almost every creative field, is when you’ll start to expand your reach and earn more clients’s
Talked to people with experience:
During architecture school it is extremely important to make connections and learn as much as you can, one of THE BEST ways for this is to just talk to professors, upperclassmen and licensed architects and gather as much info as you can

Everyone tells architecture students to learn Rhino, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit…
but no one explains how to actually learn them efficiently.
Here’s the method that worked for me:
1. Don’t learn the software — learn one project.
Pick a small project (a pavilion, house, or studio project) and model the entire thing. You’ll naturally learn the tools you actually need.
2. Copy tutorials first.
Find one YouTube tutorial and rebuild exactly what they do. This helps you understand the workflow instead of randomly clicking tools.
3. Repeat the same workflow 3–4 times.
Real learning happens when you repeat the same actions: modeling → exporting drawings → rendering → layout.
4. Use software together.
Architecture workflows are never one tool. For example:
Rhino → AutoCAD → Illustrator → Photoshop.
That’s how you actually learn architecture software fast.
And once you know the tools, the next challenge is turning your work into a strong portfolio.
