PLStop Averaging Your Speed Wrong! 🛑 (Arithmetic vs Harmonic Mean) 🏎️➗
We all know how to calculate an average, right? Add the numbers up and divide.
But what if I told you that using the regular average can give you the completely WRONG answer in the real world? It all depends on whether you are measuring "Amounts" or "Rates."
1. The Arithmetic Mean (The Classic Average) 🍎
This is the one we all know and love. It is perfect for amounts, sizes, and quantities.
If you have 10 apples and your friend has 20 apples, the average is 15.
Formula: (A + B) / 2
It distributes everything equally. Simple and fair!
2. The Trap (The Commute Problem) 🚗
Imagine you drive to work at 30 mph because of traffic. On the way home, the road is clear, so you drive 60 mph.
What was your average speed for the whole trip?
If you used the Arithmetic Mean: (30 + 60) / 2 = 45 mph.
WRONG! ❌
3. The Harmonic Mean (The "Rate" Savior) ⏱️
Because you drove slower on the way there, you spent way more TIME driving at 30 mph than you did at 60 mph. You can't just add speeds together!
For rates, ratios, and speeds, we use the Harmonic Mean. It flips the numbers upside down (reciprocals) to balance out the time.
Formula for 2 numbers: 2 / ( (1/A) + (1/B) )
The Math: 2 / ( (1/30) + (1/60) ) = 40 mph.
Why this is a superpower: 🦸♂️
This isn't just a math trick. If you want to get into Machine Learning, the Harmonic Mean is exactly how AI models calculate their "F1 Score" to balance out precision and recall.
Amounts? Use Arithmetic.
Rates? Use Harmonic.
