BLThe M47 field jacket came out of a strange in-between moment. WWII was over, but France wasn’t done fighting. The old pre-war uniforms felt outdated, and across the Atlantic, the Americans had just spent the better part of a decade pouring time, money, and brainpower into outfitting their soldiers properly. Like it or not, the benchmark was set.
The M47 was France’s answer. Not a copy, but clearly inspired by the M43 used by the American GIs.
Adopted in 1947, it was built with pure function in mind. Four large front pockets to actually carry gear. A roomy cut for layering across shifting climates, from cold Europe to the heat of Indochina and North Africa. Early versions used heavy cotton twill, later herringbone twill, breathable, durable, field-ready. Stand collar, adjustable cuffs, simple buttons. Easy to repair. Hard to kill.
The pattern evolved slightly over time, but the fundamentals stayed put: cropped body, strong shoulders, generous pockets. That balance is exactly why it still makes sense today.
The M47 wasn’t designed to be stylish. It was a post-war reset, a modern field jacket built to work first and look good by accident.
Now, nearly 80 years later, we’ve got a small stack of original M47s waiting at your local vintage militia supplier. No reproductions. The real thing.
