FLEver wonder how artificial reefs are made? 🪸 Jeff Weakley headed out of Fort Pierce Inlet to watch the Saint Lucie County Artificial Reef Programs deployment of boulders and construction debris on the Lee Harris Memorial Reef site—one of three new deployments in the area—in an effort to increase habitat for reef-dwelling species like snapper, cobia, kingfish and grouper. The historic SS United States was once considered the world’s fastest ship in the 1950s. Now it’ll have a new home underwater.
The former ocean liner is headed to Mobile, Alabama, where it’ll be cleaned up before its eventual final destination off Destin-Fort Walton Beach in Florida. Anglers and divers are in for a treat.
