MAWhy do I build my own painting surfaces? It’s simple: MDF panels just let the paint dry differently than canvas, and that suits my technique much better. I rarely use brushes. Instead, I work with spatulas, sponges, and all sorts of other tools, and MDF just handles that kind of approach far better.
In this video, I’m showing you how I do it. I found a large 120 by 88 cm MDF board on the street. The first thing I did was mount it onto wooden strips and glue it down. I do this because I always build my own frames, and this makes it easier to attach the frame later on.
Since this particular board is 8 mm thick and heavy, I used screws instead of nails to secure it. After that, I covered the screws with filler and primed the entire surface twice. Now it’s ready for painting.
If you’re curious why I go through all this effort, it’s because I’m used to it. I’ve been doing it this way for so long that it just feels right. Plus, it means every part of my work is touched by my own hands, from the surface to the frame.
