Is a congenital heart condition characterized by a hole in the septum—the wall that separates the heart's two upper chambers (atria). This "hole in the heart" allows blood to flow abnormally between the chambers, which can lead to various health complications if left untreated.
📌The 2D Echocardiogram (2D Echo) View
In a real medical scan, like an echocardiogram, the findings are more subtle but clinically critical:
The "Dropout": The most direct finding is a visible break or "gap" in the thin white line representing the atrial septum.
•Chamber Enlargement: Because extra blood is being pushed into the right side, you will often see the Right Atrium (RA) and Right Ventricle (RV) appear significantly larger than the left side.
•Septal Motion: Doctors look for the wall between the ventricles to move abnormally (flattening) due to the high pressure from the extra blood on the right side.
📌The Animation View
Animations are used to simplify the anatomy so you can see the "plumbing" clearly:
•The Defect: It clearly depicts a hole in the septum wall.
•The Shunt: Most ASDs involve a left-to-right shunt. This means oxygen-rich (red) blood leaks from the left atrium into the right atrium, mixing with oxygen-poor (blue) blood.
Volume Overload: The animation shows how this extra blood "overloads" the right side of the heart, forcing it to pump more blood to the lungs than necessary.
Key Complications
If the hole is large and remains untreated, it can lead
•Pulmonary Hypertension: High blood pressure in the lung arteries.
📌Right-Side Heart Failure: The heart becomes too tired from the constant volume overload.
Eisenmenger Syndrome: In rare, severe cases, the pressure on the right side becomes so high that the blood flow reverses (right-to-left), sending oxygen-poor blood to the rest of the body.

Crutch palsy (also called Saturday night palsy when similar mechanism) is a radial nerve injury caused by improper use of crutches.
🔹 Cause
Excessive pressure of the axilla (armpit) on crutch tops
Poor crutch fitting or weight bearing through the axilla instead of hands
🔹 Nerve involved
Radial nerve
🔹 Clinical features
Wrist drop (inability to extend wrist and fingers)
Weakness of:
Wrist extensors
Finger extensors
Sensory loss over:
Dorsum of hand (especially first web space)
🔹 Key point
👉 Weight should be borne through the hands, not the axilla, to prevent this condition.
🔹 Management
Remove pressure (correct crutch use)
Wrist splint (to prevent contractures)
Physiotherapy
Most cases recover if compression is relieved earl
