This is the most insane tech company in the world...ASML. Every single computer chip on Earth is made using their machines. Nvidia, Apple, Intel, Samsung…none of them can make any chips without ASML. But here’s the craziest part, the way these machines work is completely mindblowing. This is how computer chips are actually made… First, the ASML machine fires tiny droplets of molten tin. 50,000 droplets per second…each one thinner than a human hair. They then shoot a laser at each individual droplet, which vaporizes the tin into a plasma. That plasma…is hotter than the surface of the sun. It’s so hot, that when the plasma is created, it also emits extreme UV light. The ASML machine guides that light through a series of hyper precise mirrors to beam it on a stencil which has the pattern for the chip. That pattern is then projected onto a thin slice of silicon that’s coated with special light reactive chemicals…essentially using the light to print the pattern onto the silicon. The machine then repeats this light printing process thousands of times, to build layer upon layer of silicon that stacks together to create a fully functional chip. Now here’s where it gets wild… These chip designs are super intricate…billions of transistors spaced only a few atoms apart. And that means the accuracy of the ASML machines are the equivalent of shooting a laser from the moon and hitting a penny on Earth. How insane is that? So in layman’s terms, the process to make a computer chip is vaporizing molten tin to create invisible light that beams atomic patterns onto thousands of layers of silicon. Shoutout science. Tanpanya, chip tercanggih di dunia mulai dari prosesor smartphone flagship, GPU kecerdasan buatan, hingga superkomputer tidak akan pernah bisa diproduksi. ASML adalah satu-satunya perusahaan di Bumi yang mampu membangun mesin litografi EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet). Teknologi ini menggunakan cahaya dengan panjang gelombang 13,5 nanometer untuk mencetak pola transistor di wafer silikon. Ukuran ini begitu kecil hingga mendekati skala atom. Untuk menghasilkan cahaya EUV, mesin ASML menembakkan laser berenergi tinggi ke tetesan timah cair sebanyak 50.000 kali per detik, menciptakan plasma bersuhu ratusan ribu derajat. Cahaya yang dihasilkan kemudian dipantulkan oleh serangkaian cermin multilayer paling halus di dunia, bukan lensa biasa, karena cahaya EUV akan diserap oleh hampir semua material. Seluruh proses berlangsung dalam ruang vakum ekstrem, sebab cahaya EUV tidak bisa merambat di udara. Presisi yang dibutuhkan nyaris tidak masuk akal, pergeseran beberapa atom saja dapat menyebabkan cacat pada chip. Satu unit mesin EUV ASML harganya sekitar 150–200 juta dolar AS, terdiri dari lebih dari 100.000 komponen, berat ratusan ton sehingga dikirim menggunakan puluhan kontainer dan pesawat kargo khusus. Yang membuat ASML benar-benar unik adalah fakta bahwa teknologi ini tidak bisa dikuasai satu negara saja.
