DA5 things to watch for when applying asphalt shingles.
1. Nail placement. Every nail needs to hit the nailing strip. Too high and the shingle won’t seal. Too low and you’re through the exposure line and asking for leaks. This is the number one thing that separates a good roof from a callback.
2. Starter strip overhang. Your starter course should overhang the drip edge by about a quarter to three eighths of an inch. Too much and it curls over time. Too little and water wraps back under the edge and rots your fascia.
3. Offset your joints. Every course needs to be staggered so no two cutouts or joints line up within a six inch window. If they line up, water has a straight path through your roof. It’s that simple.
4. Valleys and flashing. This is where most roofs fail. Make sure your valley flashing is lapped correctly and your shingles are trimmed clean with a chalk line. Sloppy valleys leak. Every time.
5. Temperature matters. Shingles need heat to seal. If you’re installing below 5 degrees Celsius the adhesive strip won’t activate and your shingles will blow off in the first windstorm.
