Here’s thing i wish i knew before becoming a data analyst 📊 1. SQL is your best friend — it gets you through 80% of the work. 2. Excel isn’t basic — pivot tables & formulas are used daily. 3. Visualization tools (Tableau/Power BI) make you stand out. 4. Communication > technical sometimes — if you can’t explain insights, they don’t matter. 5. You don’t need 100 certifications — projects & practice speak louder. 6. Most of your time is data cleaning — not fancy dashboards. 7. Business understanding is key — knowing why the data matters is more valuable than just coding. 8. Networking gets you jobs faster than applications — LinkedIn visibility + projects > sending 500 resumes [data analytics, data analyst, corporate, data]

Hi, I am Ananya & I work as a Business Analyst for a Big 5 bank 🏦 Here’s the exact strategy I followed before applying & landing interviews: 1️⃣ Start with Excel → Every BA begins here. Go beyond SUM and AVERAGE - learn Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, IF statements, and Conditional Formatting. Practical tip: grab free datasets from Kaggle.com or data.gov 2️⃣ Move to SQL → Focus on SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, JOINS, and subqueries. Practical tip: use free sites like SQLZoo.net or Mode Analytics SQL tutorials to practice. 3️⃣ Learn Python (optional but powerful) → Basics of Pandas, NumPy, and simple data wrangling can really set you apart. You don’t need to be a data scientist - just know how to automate repetitive tasks or do quick analysis. Tip: try Kaggle Learn Python for free, beginner-friendly lessons. 4️⃣ Pick a visualization tool: Power BI or Tableau → Both are recruiter favorites. Start by building dashboards that tell stories, not just charts. Practical tip: download public datasets (like sales or HR attrition data) and create interactive dashboards with slicers/filters. 5️⃣ Sharpen PowerPoint skills → Don’t underestimate this! A BA is judged on how clearly they present. Stick to 3–5 bullets per slide, keep text minimal, and focus on visuals. 6️⃣ Finally, create projects → Tie everything together: clean raw data in Excel → query insights with SQL → visualize in Tableau/Power BI → present in PowerPoint. Recruiters love seeing end-to-end projects. ✨ Follow this roadmap step by step, and you’ll not only build skills - you’ll have proof of work recruiters can see. That’s what made the difference for me. 👉 Save this roadmap for later 👉 Comment “BA” for a free list of resources for each step 👉 Follow for more BA career & interview tips #jobhelp #jobsearch #jobhunt #jobhunting #careerhelp #businessanalyst #hiring #careercoach #jobs #careerhelp #bankjob #dataanalyst

i always feel like data analyst DITLs seem v technical 24/7 so I wanted to share a day in my life as a senior data analyst my reality is usually SQL, Slack and the occasional stakeholder meeting and data problem that ruins your day this day was a lil different as we’re hiring for a data analyst in our team, so I’m helping to do the technical interviews which needs a bit of prep on my side 👩‍💻 I love being a data analyst at a book company, but it looks NOTHING like I imagined when I was trying to get here! If you’re trying to become a data analyst, follow for the realistic version 🤭

1. It’s not just about tools. Everyone tells you to learn SQL, Excel, Tableau, Power BI— but no one talks about how to think analytically. Your mindset matters more than your tech stack. 2. You don’t need to master every tool. Learn one tool deeply and understand how to apply it — recruiters care about problem-solving, not tool collection. 3. Communication is your superpower. You can write perfect SQL, but if you can’t explain insights clearly, you’ll always be replaceable. Analysts tell stories, not just show dashboards. 4. Business understanding beats technical perfection. The best analysts aren’t the most technical — they’re the ones who understand why the numbers matter. 5. Stakeholder management is 50% of your job. You’ll spend half your time aligning with people, not writing queries. Learning to ask the right questions is key. 6. Real-world data is messy. College or YouTube datasets are clean. Real data? Full of nulls, duplicates, and inconsistencies. Cleaning it is half the battle. 7. Soft skills matter more than you think. Curiosity, clarity, storytelling, and adaptability — these separate a good analyst from a great one. 8. Every company defines “Data Analyst” differently. Some expect SQL-heavy roles, others want dashboard designers, and a few want mini data scientists. Read job descriptions carefully. 9. You’ll never stop learning. Tools evolve, business needs shift, and there’s always something new — it’s normal to not know everything. 10. It’s okay to start small. Even simple Excel projects or small SQL practice can build strong fundamentals. Don’t compare your start to someone’s highlight reel. You cannot become a data analyst if you can’t do these things (shared the tools I use in the end)🔥🔥 Follow @onestopdata for data related content! ✅The most imp thing data analysts do is to understand the business requirements. (1) Gathering Data This means collecting data from different sources. Many a times this is done in collaboration with data engineers and architects hence usually the data analyst doesn’t have to do a lot in this. (2) Cleaning Data Going through the data and trying to understand it, making corrections where needed such as removing outliers or data that should not be included in the analysis. This step can take a lot of time, but understanding the data is crucial before you start to process it. (3) Processing data The data processing part of the process is where I use my skills and tools to analyze the work and come up with solutions for the problem at hand. (4) Creating reports for business leaders As an analyst, a lot of my time goes into creating and maintaining reports/dashboards for stakeholders and business leaders. This means showing the metrics and KPIs in the best manner possible to help drive business decisions. The best analysts are those that can use data to tell a story. (5) Collaborating with people This one is my favorite! As a data analyst, you work with many people across departments, both senior and junior. You’ll also likely collaborate closely with other people who work in data science like data architects and database developers. Tools I use: Excel,PowerBI,SQL and Python(sometimes) #dataanalytics #onestopdata #datacleaning #dataprocessing #dashboard #reports #sql #powerbi #excel #python

I had never opened SQL in my life. 45 days later I was using it in a real project at work. This is exactly what I did. Step 1 — YouTube first. Before touching anything, I just watched a few videos to understand what SQL even is. My honest reaction? Hard-looking, but not complicated. That distinction matters. It calmed the fear. Step 2 — W3Schools for 5-6 days. Free. No structure. Just me reading and trying things. I learned some basics but quickly realized I was going in circles. I needed a proper path, not random tabs. Step 3 — I enrolled in a structured course. This is what actually changed things. A proper curriculum, a sequence, accountability. SQL didn’t come immediately — I studied other subjects first. But I was building foundations without realizing it. Step 4 — When SQL finally came, I gave it everything. About a month on SQL alone. Real queries. Actual datasets. Not toy examples — the kind of structured practice that forces you to think, not just copy. Step 5 — 15-20 days later, I got the job. Data Analyst. Real projects. Dashboards. Reports. Things I had only seen on LinkedIn were now my Monday morning. The part nobody tells you: you don’t need to learn SQL perfectly before you start. You need to learn it purposefully. I came from pharmacy. Zero tech background. If the path above sounds doable to you — it is. I just walked it. Save this for the day you decide to start👩🏻‍💻 . . . . How I’d become a Data Analyst in 2026 ⬇️ 1️⃣ Get in the door (any role) Data Analyst titles are hard to land, degree or not. So get into any role at a tech forward company with an analytics team/department . Sales. Ops. Data entry. Work up! Prove your value. That’s exactly what I did. 2️⃣ Improve what’s in front of you Look for small things you can control: • Excel • MS Access • Power Query Invoices research (ms access), trends, reports doesn’t matter, anything YOU can do. 3️⃣ Learn only what you need Target the tools you’re already working with/access too. (DataCamp and Codecademy worked for me) 4️⃣ Build something real Not tutorials. Build a tool people (and you) actually use even if it’s simple. Examples could be: Using forms and VBA/SQL in ms access to build a form for people to researching invoices! 5️⃣ Show your work Demo it. Explain the impact. Who uses it. Why it matters. And how it helps! 6️⃣ Say yes to opportunities Take on EVERYTHING, prove you can do the work, even if it adds more stress. That’s how you stack proof for the next role. No degree required. 👉 Follow if you’re breaking into data. #dataanalyst #howto #breakintotech #nodegree #2026goals
