Part of astronaut training is microgravity flights, aka the “Vomit comet”. The plane flies a series of parabolic arcs: • Pulls up steeply → you feel ~2x gravity • Crests the parabola → feel microgravity • Dives down → gravity returns • A flight typically includes 30–40 parabolas These flights help us: • Practice working in microgravity • Test equipment • Train our bodies and brains for spaceflight This is from a microgravity training session with @spacehumanity 🚀

What’s it like to train as an astronaut? 🧑‍🚀 Today, @astro.rosemary is showing us how she’s preparing for space with a parabolic flight. For 22 seconds during each parabola, astronauts experience weightlessness. This allows them to practice the skills they’ll one day need in a microgravity environment. Floating around may look fun, but it’s only a very small part of their rigorous and complex training. Want to see more of what astronauts do to prepare for space? Let us know if you’d like a sneak peek into other parts of training! 📹 @europeanspaceagency 📸 ESA/ Novespace

Train today, perform tomorrow. ⁣ ⁣ The Artemis II astronauts practiced some of the pre-launch procedures they’ll perfect before their slated 2024 launch to the Moon.⁣ ⁣ @NASAAstronauts @Astro_Reid, @AstroVicGlover, and @Astro_Christina, along with @CanadianSpaceAgency astronaut @AstroJeremy, awoke at their crew quarters at @NASAKennedy and put on test versions of the Orion Crew Survival System spacesuits they will wear on launch day. They then departed to Launch Pad 39B in our new #Artemis crew transportation fleet. ⁣ ⁣ Upon arrival at the pad, the crew headed onto the mobile launcher and proceeded up the tower to the white room inside the crew access arm. There was no Orion spacecraft or Space Launch System rocket on the pad today, but on launch day this is where the crew will take their final Earth-bound steps prior to their journey around the Moon. ⁣ ⁣ Credit: NASA⁣ ⁣ #Moon #Space #Launch #Astronauts #NASA #NASAKennedy #LaunchDay #Orion #SpaceLaunchSystem #Artemis

Yes, astronauts do indeed train underwater as part of their preparation for space missions. This unique training method is conducted in large water tanks, such as NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) or similar facilities around the world. Underwater training simulates the microgravity environment experienced in space, offering astronauts a way to practice tasks like spacewalks and equipment handling in conditions similar to those they'll encounter in orbit. This method allows astronauts to develop the necessary skills and muscle memory required for successful extravehicular activities (EVAs) while minimizing the risks associated with training in space. Why do we practice formation floating, crew interaction, and joint payload operations in microgravity in advance of our spaceflight? @kelliegerardi said it best after her spaceflight, "Microgravity experience is key." As we prepare for our @iias_nlc IIAS-02 spaceflight, not only do myself, @spacenorah & Kellie need to be comfortable in the microgravity environment, we also need to be familiar with each other's movements, well-rehearsed, coordinated, choreographed, and prepared to de-conflict with other happenings in the cabin as we complete our own sequences- and parabolic flight is a key component of that training. It was stellar to be able to present our own training for suborbital spaceflight at the @nasa Investigators Workshop! ✨️👩🏻‍🚀👩🏽‍🚀👩🏻‍🚀🚀✨️ #parabolicflight #zerogravity #zerog #astronaut #astronautics #medicine #spacemedicine #spaceflight #humanspaceflight #commercialspaceflight #research #discover #discovery #explore #exploration #pushthelimits #daretoexplore #beextreme #womeninstem #canada #canadianastronaut #india #indianastronaut #teamwork

Grab your swimsuit and goggles, and join us in the warm, pristine waters of a very exclusive dive site – NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab! This 6.2-million-gallon pool is a simulated microgravity environment where astronauts train for spacewalks, and it’s what NASA diver Arielle Valdez calls her office! Arielle walks – swims? – us through a day in the life of a NASA dive specialist and shares her story of how she went from diving shipwrecks across the world to training astronauts on an underwater, true-to-size mockup of the International Space Station. A plunge into the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory with @Astro_Reid wearing the Extravehicular Mobility Unit for a development run. This training isn’t specific to Artemis II, but part of our role in the astronaut office is supporting testing for future spacesuits. This training is super fun but also gruelling. Thanks @drcatherinehansen for the video!

NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir's Exercise Routine | International Space Station Support FriendsofNASA.org | Expedition 74 Flight Engineer and NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir: "Apologies for the background noise, life on International Space Station is loud! Without daily exercise on the ISS, we would lose significant muscle mass and bone density, since we don’t have the daily loading on our bodies that Earth’s gravitational environment provides. We have the ARED 🏋️‍♀️ (Advanced Resistive Exercise Device), an engineering marvel that can be configured into a large number of weight lifting exercises, a cycle ergometer 🚲 (think a stationary bike with no handlebars and no seat—not needed in space!), and a treadmill. 🏃‍♀️ I started exercise right away, and it was so cool. Complete muscle memory! Really feels like I never left. Here’s a peek into our daily exercise routine!"
