▪️Where to go?
1. Flores: this colonial & colorful city by the lake Petén-Itzá is a perfect base to visit the Mayan cities of Tikal & Yaxhá. Very busy, live music at night, colorful houses & scenic boat rides aorund the lake.
2. Tikal and Yaxhá are 2 Mayan cities located in Petén Rainforest that you can’t miss! The most impressive ancient cities I’ve seen in my life! There are jungle lodges to spend the night in Tikal, but Flores’ hotels are definitely cheaper.
3. Hobbitenango: it’s mainly touristy but the views from this ‘hobbit-inspired’ village are very scenic, good for a half/day excursion from Antigua Guatemala.
4. Antigua Guatemala is the most charming city in the country: colonial houses, nice cafés, boutiques & cute little hotels… and from there you can visit Acatenango, Chichicastenango, etc.
5. 2-day hike to Acatenango Volcano is a must for active travelers and hikers. You’ll see and hear lava eruptions from the distance every 40 minutes (including at night) but campsites are at 3900 meters so it’s not an easy hike🌋
6. Lake Atitlán has a very special magnetism, that’s why there are many yoga & mindfulness retreats happening there. Super relaxing, chill… you can stay either in Panajachel (more touristy) or in San Marcos or San Pedro (more authentic & native)🎊
▪️How many days?
You can visit all these places in 8/9 days if you are speedy, but I suggest spending between 10 and 15 to have enough time to enjoy & visit in detail.
▪️How to move around?
I suggest renting a car with a local driver and guide (I know the best local guide, drop me a message if you want his whatsapp) It’s not expensive and it will make your life much easier because the only domestic flight that makes sense taking is to go to Flores & Tikal. You’ll have to cover the rest by car.
▪️Safety:
I’ve been twice and I’ve felt super safe everywhere, but I’ve always rented a local driver to simplify things and avoid the wrong locations.
