_CStrong readers start with strong sounds 📚
During our Stage 1 Speed Sounds, we practise producing the pure phonemes from Little Learners Love Literacy.
One important thing I explicitly model is keeping sounds short and crisp, without adding an extra vowel sound.
When children are learning new sounds, it’s common to attach a small “uh” sound to the end (for example saying “puh” instead of the pure /p/). I correct this by modelling the sound again and encouraging students to repeat it using a voiceless, clipped sound.
Why does this matter? Because accurate sound production supports phonemic awareness and blending.
When students later read words, it’s much easier to blend /p/ /a/ /t/ into pat if the sounds are produced cleanly rather than stretched with extra vowels.
These small corrections during daily Speed Sound practice help build the foundation for strong decoding and confident reading ✨
