MAAdvice I'd give to new authors if I wasn't afraid to hurt your feelings: ❤️
Let me preface this by saying, I do hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings and I'm also not an expert!
I'm just an indie author who's done pretty well for only having one book out. 🥰
~ The most important skill to develop as an author is to stop caring about what everyone else is doing, and stop obsessing over other authors journeys or success. Everyone's path is different, say this to yourself as many times as it takes.
Even if you copy exactly what someone else does, your results will come out different.
It's okay to learn, and grow from eachother. That's what the author community is for, but you need to practice a healthy mindset to make in this industry long-term.
~ Skip the "Bells & Whistles". Just like every authors path is different, so are their budgets for publishing. If someone is telling you that you HAVE to spend xyz to be successful, or you HAVE to have a website, subscriptions to this or that, or all the little publishing extras... RUN.
Many of us skip having a website, newsletter, hardcovers, special editions, subscriptions... and we find success anyways. Readers only care about one thing, The Book.
~ Market however you ENJOY. What does enjoyment have to do with marketing? If readers can tell when you got bored writing your book, then they can tell when you hate your marketing. Pick your favorite way to market and master it. You can expand later if needed.
~ Community Value. It's okay to value your data, sales, and goals. But remember not to lose sight of your community values, your reader and author communities should always be prioritized. If all you provide are ads, readers won't stick around, you have to provide some form of deeper value and community. The same goes for building lasting author friendships, we can tell when it's just transactional.
~ I don't believe in 'shadow bans' or algo pergatories. Take the rest you need from social media. Any account can be revived. I've done it on this account and many others at my job and in my event groups.
