The 4 things you need to do before an Adult or Child Autism Assessment. 1️⃣Speak to parents, older siblings, or other family members about your early development and any differences in behavior, social, or sensory functioning when compared to peers! Parents have a conversation with your child’s teachers or other caregivers. 2️⃣ Look back over report cards, school reports, IEP’s and any parent- teacher communication for helpful information about development. Bring anything relevant to the evaluation. 3️⃣ Pull up any childhood videos or photos and bring them with you electronically. Also write down any signs that you recall or that you or child experiences currently under these categories: Sensory, Sameness, Social, Interests, Stimming, or Repetitive Behavior. When put on the spot you will be surprised how much you forget. 4️⃣ If you would like to use insurance check your deductible and coverage for autism or neuropsychological assessments. If deductibles are high try to lower it during open enrollment periods and increase your coverage for that year. Check to see if you have out of Network coverage and maximize this so that you have less of a wait for an evaluation and more options for psychologists/neuropsychologists. Let us know in the comments if you have any other tips for preparation before Autism assessments. Share with someone who could use this information and follow for more. #autisticadults #autistic #autismassessment #autismevaluation #autisticwomen #autismacceptance

My reaction in therapists groups when someone says “only psychologist can diagnose Autism” A neuropsychological evaluation and a diagnostic assessment serve different purposes. Not everyone needs a full neuropsych with a psychologist. Many late identified Autistics are just looking for a comprehensive evaluation to understand their diagnosis better. After doing assessments for 10 years with my mentor, and a year a half in my private practice, I am so happy to now share my process in order to increase accessible assessment options. Visual referencing, joint attention, and switching attention between social partners is a huge predictor of neurotype! I obviously did not know at the time that Eva would develop differently than her cousin. Eva was always interested in looking at other kids and would smile often. She imitated a few signs and attempted a few words. Then, she began to regress at about 13 months. For me, I knew it was not from something in the environment. She was born autistic, and while she became less social and communicative (and more into her deep interests), it was a completely expected part of her development. But then, she has been growing at rapid speed since 3 years old. So proud of my little girl ❤️. 🌳💐💖 🌳💐💖 Hi friend! If it’s our first time meeting, my name is Lauren Conley. I started as an early intervention speech language pathologist and I am now a mom to a young autistic girl; she is curious and learning new concepts every day. She (and her baby sister) are my pride and joy! (They are also seriously a lot of work 😂). I want to empower every parent out there to feel like a competent guide to their child. During the day you can find me on my computer doing virtual coaching for caregivers and clients of all ages. We program and use AAC devices, we complete lessons from the RDI program, we review home videos, and we imbed strategies into daily routines. There is always something new to learn about how we parent and how we can support children with special needs. Find out how to be your child’s most trusted guide and promote a growth-seeking mindset! Follow up to previous viral video! Eva and Melanie are older here (between 17-18 months). The signs are not as much about what Eva does, but what she is not able to do. (The overt signs like toe walking, hand flapping, repetitive sounds instead of speech (aka gestalt language) and lining up toys would come later, around 20 months.) This is a video from 3 years ago. Why is it important to notice signs? Because even before I thought of autism, I noticed social/pragmatic milestones she was not meeting. And the funny thing?? These milestones are often not on baby milestone charts! So if your child isn’t pointing, responding to their name, more focused on objects than people… then the first step is to dive into people play (or play either people instead of toys). I am working on a ‘people play’ course for this very reason! Is people play just tickles and chasing? Nope! It is using a pre-planned routine where both the child and adult work together and add their own changes and ideas! Follow for more! 🌳💐💖 🌳💐💖 Hi friend!
