Is it "lack of willpower"... or is it just too loud? 🔊 Most people think weight loss is a math problem: Calories In < Calories Out. As a therapist specializing in food addiction, I’m here to tell you: It’s actually a volume problem. It’s called Food Noise. Imagine trying to have a conversation while a siren is going off next to your ear. 🚨 That’s what food noise feels like—a constant, intrusive mental loop about your next meal or the snacks in the pantry. Here’s the truth: It’s Biological: Food noise isn't a character flaw; it’s a physiological signal. The "What Now?": When the noise finally quiets (through treatment or clinical work), many people feel lost. They’ve never heard their actual body cues before. Stop fighting your biology and start understanding it. When the noise clears, the "willpower" you’ve been looking for is usually already there. 🤍 Does your brain ever feel "too loud" when it comes to food? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇 #FoodNoise #FoodAddiction #IntuitiveEating #FoodFreedom MindfulEating #WeightLossJourney

Comment SPACE for our Food Noise tackling tool - The SPACE METHOD 🌌 “Food noise”, which can be defined as persistent thoughts about food, cravings, and eating, is not a willpower issue. Research shows clear gender differences, driven by neurobiology, psychology and decades of cultural conditioning around food and body image. What you need to know - ➡️ More frequent cravings Women report ~15–16% more daily craving episodes than men in weight-loss settings. ➡️ Stronger brain response to food Women show greater activation in craving-related brain regions when exposed to food cues. ➡️ Higher stress sensitivity Higher baseline anxiety and stress make food more likely to be used for regulation. ➡️ Stress–craving loop Stress increases cravings → eating triggers guilt → guilt increases stress → repeat. ➡️ Emotion-linked food noise Cravings are more often driven by stress, boredom, anxiety, or loneliness - not hunger. ➡️ More guilt after eating Greater moralisation of food increases rumination and intrusive food thoughts. ➡️ Earlier diet culture exposure Years of restriction train the brain to see food as scarce or “earned”. ➡️ Restriction makes it worse Dieting amplifies food focus, craving intensity, and reward value. ➡️ Intensity > intake Men may eat more overall, but women report stronger cravings and louder food noise. Lowering food noise requires adequate, consistent energy intake, sufficient protein and carbohydrates, emotional regulation skills, and removing moral judgement from food. When food becomes predictable, allowed, and emotionally neutral, the brain stops scanning for it and the noise naturally turns down.

Food noise is having a moment, and for good reason. It’s not about discipline. Food noise is biology, the brain’s built-in survival system, now navigating a very different food environment where food is calorie dense and engineered to keep you wanting more. If you are considering a GLP-1 to handle food noise, you need to read this first. Food noise isn’t a problem that requires medication. Food noise is just your brain getting louder when you are restricting (aka dieting). For the majority of people, eating enough and regularly throughout the day will get rid of food noise. That’s why skipping breakfast is a shortcut to feeling out of control with food later in the day. Eating something in the morning doesn’t have to be a perfectly cooked meal that takes an hour to prepare. It can be as simple as a box of granola bars in your car to eat on the way to work, or even buying breakfast at Starbucks. Don’t let chasing perfection get in the way of progress here, babe. Low effort counts here. ❤️ If you’re struggling with food noise and can’t seem to figure out how to make it stop, DM me or comment below the word READY so we can chat more about your goals. ❤️ Make sure you’re following for more mental health content about all things food + body image!

Just because something exists doesn’t mean it’s a solution. You CAN ask ChatGPT how to stop thinking about food. You CAN download a new habit tracker and try to out-optimize hunger. But food noise isn’t a productivity issue. It’s not a motivation problem. And it’s definitely not something you fix by adding more rules, tracking, or “discipline.” Throwing more tools at a nervous system that’s already overwhelmed usually makes it louder, not quieter. Humor aside: this is the work I do every day with high-achieving clients who are tired of feeling controlled by food, their bodies, or the need to do everything “right.” I’m currently accepting new clients in WI. Food noise is not a character flaw. It is not a discipline problem. It is not you being broken. A huge driver is restriction history, including unconscious dieting. You are not “on a diet,” but you still treat food like it has a morality score. Good, bad, allowed, not allowed, and a constant “I shouldn’t.” Your brain reads that as scarcity. And scarcity makes food louder. Thank you, brain. Very dramatic. Very committed. Full video on YouTube. I wish I’d learned this back when I was struggling: ㅤ 🤔 Food is predictable, reliable, and available… unlike people, who can be unpredictable, unreliable, and unavailable. ㅤ 🤔 It’s sometimes easier to have a relationship with food than with people. ㅤ 🤔 Eating until your stomach hurts can be a way of unconsciously converting emotional pain into physical pain. We’re not consciously aware of this, but it serves a protective function. It’s easier to get rid of physical pain than emotional. ㅤ 🤔 Eating can be a way of filling a void. If you’re lonely and empty, if you want more of something (more love, money, inner peace) but it’s out of reach, food can symbolically fill you up. ㅤ I’ve helped women all over the world stop binge eating, most of whom thought they’d tried everything. ㅤ 👉My free Emotional Eating Quiz can help you start understanding what the food is doing for you and how to respond differently, so food stops controlling your life. 6 beliefs about food noise you probably won’t agree with I believe food noise isn’t something that just happens to you. It’s something you were trained into by dieting, restriction, rules and years of thinking food needs to be controlled. Calling it biology without questioning the conditioning keeps you stuck. I believe a high percentage of people say they want food freedom but what they actually want is permission to stay comfortable. Turning off food noise requires changing how you respond to it and that scares people more than the noise itself. I believe constantly calling yourself broken, addicted or out of control keeps food loud. If you identify as powerless around food, your brain will prove you right every single time. I believe staying stuck in the story of this is just how I am feels safer than taking responsibility for doing something different because changing your identity is uncomfortable. I believe food noise doesn’t end when you find the right plan. It ends when you stop outsourcing your power to food and start responding like someone who trusts themselves like the grown ass adult they are And I believe most people replay the same food story in their head on repeat — I can’t help it I always mess this up This is just my issue Until the noise feels inevitable. It’s not. It’s familiar. None of this is about willpower by the way It’s about what you believe is possible for you. The moment I stopped treating food noise like something that got to control me anymore and started treating it like a pattern I could change everything shifted. When you’re done protecting the story that keeps you stuck, comment WORKSHOP and I’ll send you 3 free workshops #foodnoise #overeating #emotionaleating #eatingpsychology

Restriction always breeds obsession. Not because you’re dramatic. Not because you’re weak. Not because you “just love food too much.” But because your body and brain are wired to respond to scarcity. The second you label something off-limits, your brain assigns it value. Now it’s special. Now it’s urgent. Now it’s loud. And the more you try to tighten control, the more mental space food takes up. That constant thinking about food? That hyper-fixation? That “I’ll be good all day and then lose it at night” pattern? It’s a predictable response to restriction.

Food is the loudest subject in your brain for a very simple reason. Let me explain through the lens of eating psychology and brain science….. You have been accidentally training your brain to obsess about food… and then blaming yourself when it works. How? Restriction. Control. Food rules. Trying to be ‘good’. All of that tells your brain one thing: food matters more than everything else. So your brain does its job. It scans. It plans. It thinks about food constantly. Not because something is wrong with you but because this is the pattern you’ve been reinforcing probably for decades. Once you realise food noise isn’t a character flaw but a learned brain response, you can let the shame and guilt. You stop making it mean something about you. And suddenly this becomes something you can actually change. You don’t stop food noise by trying harder, you have to change what you’re training your brain to focus on. That’s how food stops running your life If you’re ready to stop thinking about food all the time and learn how to rewire this properly, comment NOISE for my course on how to go from food-obsessed to normal eater within 21 days. #foodnoise #overeating #emotionaleating #eatingpsychology
