Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up to become an R&B and cultural icon, known for her singing, acting, and style.
At just 15 years old, Aaliyah signed her first recording contract on May 24, 1994 and released her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, which went double Platinum. Her first Billboard Hot 100 hit, “Back & Forth,” also came out that year, introducing her to fans worldwide. She followed it with the Top 10 single “At Your Best (You Are Love),” showcasing her soulful voice.
Her second album, One in a Million (1996), went double Platinum, cementing her place in R&B. In 1998, she scored a hit with “Are You That Somebody?” from the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack and performed at the Academy Awards singing “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia.
In 2000, Aaliyah made her acting debut in Romeo Must Die, starring opposite Jet Li. That same year, her song “Try Again” made history by topping the Billboard Hot 100 on airplay alone. She also won two MTV Video Music Awards for the song.
Her final studio album, Aaliyah, was released in 2001 and went multi-platinum. After her passing in 2001, she earned posthumous honors including the American Music Award for Favorite Female R&B Artist, MTV VMA for “Rock the Boat,” and multiple Grammy nominations.
Posthumously, her legacy continued with the I Care 4 U compilation, her final film Queen of the Damned, and induction into the Michigan Rock & Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2021. Her music catalog was relaunched on streaming platforms, reaching new fans worldwide.
In 2025, Aaliyah was celebrated with an Aaliyah Barbie Tribute, and her posthumous single “Gone” with Tank reached No. 1 on adult R&B airplay, extending her chart legacy decades after her passing.
