You built your app. Now you have to decide how to run it on AWS. EC2, ECS, EKS, Lambda same app. Different amounts of responsibility. EC2 You get a virtual server. You manage the OS, updates, and scaling. If the OS crashes at 2AM, that’s on you. ECS You package your app into a container. AWS handles the servers underneath. If you use Fargate → no server management. If you use EC2 launch type → you still manage instances. EKS Kubernetes on AWS. AWS manages the control plane. You manage worker nodes and cluster setup. It’s portable across clouds but only if you design it carefully. More flexibility. More complexity. Lambda You deploy code as functions. AWS runs and scales them. No servers to manage. But there are limits to timeouts, cold starts, and less runtime control. Same app. Four levels of responsibility. Quick rule: If you’re a solo dev or small team, ECS on Fargate is usually the simplest place to start. Add complexity only when you actually need it. #aws #kubernetes #devops #backend #docker

Spring and it’s proxies 🥀 This might be very basic but I recently learnt that spring annotations like Transactional, Async, and Cacheable don’t run inside your class directly. Spring creates a proxy around your bean that intercepts method calls and injects cross-cutting behavior like transactions, logging, security, and async execution. This is why: • self-invocation doesn’t trigger annotations • method visibility matters • debugging sometimes feels confusing Once you understand proxy-based AOP → Spring’s behavior becomes predictable. #buildinpublic #java #softwareengineer #backend #productivity

Why does this question make engineers fight? Interviewer: DELETE /products/1. Should it return 204 or 404 if the product is already deleted? Think of it like asking a waiter to clear your plate. You say “please take this plate away.” If the plate is already gone, do they say “done!” or “what plate?” Both are technically correct, but they tell you different things. That’s the whole debate. Quick refresher on the codes: 204 means “success, no content to return.” The thing is gone, mission accomplished. 404 means “not found.” The thing you’re asking about doesn’t exist. 🥊 The case for 204: DELETE is supposed to be idempotent, which is a fancy way of saying you can do it 100 times & the result is the same. The product is gone after the first call. It’s still gone after the second call. Why punish the client for asking twice? Just return 204 & move on. This is also way nicer when networks are flaky. If a client sends DELETE, doesn’t get a response, & retries, they shouldn’t suddenly get a 404 telling them something went wrong. Nothing went wrong. The product is deleted, which is exactly what they wanted. 🥊 The case for 404: You can’t delete something that doesn’t exist. The resource isn’t there. Returning 204 is technically lying because you didn’t actually do anything this time. 404 is the honest answer. It also helps with debugging. If your frontend thinks a product exists & sends DELETE, a 404 tells you “your data is stale, refresh.” A 204 silently hides that mismatch. ⭐️ The actual answer: Most modern API style guides (including Google’s & Microsoft’s) lean toward 204 for idempotency reasons. But the real answer in an interview is “it depends on the API’s contract, & whichever you pick, document it clearly so clients know what to expect.” The wrong answer is 200 OK with a body saying “deleted.” That’s the one everyone agrees is bad. What’s your stance? #api #rest #backend #systemdesign #techexplained
