Badlapur (2015), directed by Sriram Raghavan, is a dark revenge thriller that follows Raghu (Varun Dhawan), a simple man whose life is shattered when his wife Misha (Yami Gautam) and young son are accidentally killed during a bank robbery gone wrong by two criminals, Liak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Harman (Vinay Pathak). Consumed by grief and rage, Raghu dedicates his life to finding the men responsible, eventually tracking them down years later after Liak is released from prison due to terminal illness. Instead of killing him immediately, Raghu manipulates Liak emotionally, forcing him to confront guilt and regret, blurring the lines between victim and perpetrator. The film slowly reveals Raghu’s moral decay as his obsession with revenge turns him into someone equally cruel, highlighting how trauma can strip away humanity. Through its non-linear narrative, layered characters, and unsettling tone, Badlapur explores the cyclical nature of violence, the cost of vengeance, and the unsettling idea that justice and revenge are rarely the same thing.
