Why doesn’t mine look like the one in the pattern photos?
Same fabric. Same steps. Same effort.
And still something just feels a little different than you hoped.
This weekend in class we talked a lot about interfacing, and I told everyone something that made them laugh because they immediately understood:
Interfacing is kind of the bane of a bagmaker’s existence… but it’s also what gives our bags the structure we love.
One thing I always see is people fusing from the interfacing side. Which makes sense because that’s where the glue is.
But when you press from the fabric side instead, you can actually see what’s happening and smooth bubbles before they become a problem. That’s usually the first little lightbulb moment.
Another thing I saw was starting from the outer edges and working inward. That can trap air in the middle.
When she started from the center instead, everything just smoothed out the way she wanted.
And then there’s the ironing motion.
A lot of us start by moving the iron all over like we’re coloring on our phone with our thumb. But interfacing usually responds better to a gentle press and small controlled movement instead of sliding everywhere.
These are the little things that make bagmaking start to feel easier instead of frustrating.
