BAI don’t think 10 year old Joyce would believe me if I told her she would be a published cookbook author. Heck, I don’t think 30 year old Joyce would have believed it.
Our little pink bakery now has a little pink book! And I’m so incredibly proud of how it’s come together and how many truly talented folks have touched this book and brought it into the real world. It’s coming out on September 1st, and it would mean the world to me if you would consider preordering the book or telling your friends to preorder the book. The preorders are the key to getting Bake Sum into every store and are incredibly meaningful to show the world that there is demand for this kind of unapologetically Asian American content.
There are over 70+ recipes, many of which have been refined over the years through trial and error at our store. And there are also pastries that we haven’t made yet in the store either. The recipes come meticulously tested by many bakers at all skill levels and organized like we how train our bakers. I’ll teach you how to make Mama Tang’s famous mango pudding, and how to turn your microwave into a formidable dessert making machine and show you the gentlest way to ease yourself into the world of making croissants!
All this is to say, that I started not by being some sort of pastry maven. I was just a girl with a sweet tooth and I spent the last 10+ years figuring out what I had to say and what I wanted to make. And if I can do this, I’m super confident that you can too.

I just found the best croissants/pastries in the Bay Area and not only do they have the most perfect interior but the flavor combinations are so interesting and inspired by Asian flavors!
The musubi croissant was so creative and the cheesy garlic pull-apart was so rich and flavorful - everything was amazingly crispy and chewy.

I tried the black sesame kumquat bun (nutty & tart), croissubi (think spam and croissant fusion), and the clear winner - okonomiyaki danish (sweet, savory, flaky perfection!). WIApparently I measure the passing of time with mooncakes. I’m always shocked when it’s mooncake season, and I’m like damn it’s already Mid-Autumn Festival again?
Well at least I can stress eat the anxiety of getting old with amazing Bake Sum mooncakes.
My favorite was basically Taiwanese pineapple cake combined with li hing powder. But they were all bomb.
They sold out in two weeks last year, so pre-order them early!

there are some technical differences between a croissant and a danish, but all I know is these pastries are all crisp, light, flaky -- and yummy in the tummy!
the yuzu meringue and strawberry are not only pretty on the outside, but they are chock full of filling! (see my stories). and every bit of their savory ones are flavorful. the okonomiyaki, loco moco and croissubi are my old standbys, but the cheesy jalapeño just got added to my list of favorites!
I love the Asian influences thoughtfully baked into all that fills their display case, all made with quality and substance --which is why @bakesumpastries is easily in my top three bakeshops in the Bay. never had anything @bakesumpastries I didn't L♥️VE!
