THHere’s how I test for Bakelite.
In this reel I used Simichrome, which is one of the most popular testing methods. But it is not the only way collectors test Bakelite.
Another common method is the hot water test. When warmed, true Bakelite releases that distinct phenolic scent, which many people describe as smelling like formaldehyde, medicinal, or slightly chemical. So yes, if you have heard “formaldehyde smell,” that is exactly what many collectors mean.
Some collectors also use the hot needle test, although that is a more invasive method and should be done very carefully.
There is more than one way to test Bakelite, and I always think it is helpful to know the options.
