Focus on Rapid Movements with speed not soft toss.
Your body, feet, hands need to move, and “YOUR” throwing mechanics are important to that speed.
There will be byproducts of your accuracy if anything is off during these reps, my sole focus is to get the ball in and out of my glove while feeding my throwing hand as quick as possible.
Here’s a few examples of the speed in and out of the hand and on target. My target is at 64 feet and 7.5ft off the ground.
Let’s break down the transfer & throw
1. The transfer: I’m letting the ball travel in as long as possible and guiding it into my throwing hand at my chest. The transfer doesn’t happen at the ear, it happens at the midline area allowing your arm to scap load as you’re transferring to your throwing hand. Your glove needs to feel like it’s going to your armpit. Not loopy or out to feed the ear or your pocket.
2. Throws: As you feed your throwing hand it needs to stay tight to the body/head so you can fire it with power. Your body is the center of rotation, the farther out your hand gets the slower that ball will be released. If you throw 3/4 slot or side arm it’s still doable but you’ll lack on velo and have to make it up by rotating harder. Some will say you can’t throw side arm, etc but we all see guys do it. Train to make it work.
3. Accuracy: When it all comes together you need to adjust your focal point to hit your target with that generated speed. Your .6 transfer and supposed 1.9 pop means nothing if you can’t dot it every time. It’s the same saying “no one cares how hard you threw ball 4” its the same in catching. No one cares if you’re 1.9 was thrown to centerfield.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have the strongest arm when compared to position players. A Catcher velo is a lot different than your normal position player, as we’re starting from the squat with minimal forward moves versus taking steps to load and throw. As catchers we have to find ways to create speed that translates to less flight time.
