🪂 BASE jumping is considered the most dangerous extreme sport on earth, with a fatality rate roughly 43 times higher than skydiving. Unlike skydiving, jumpers exit from fixed objects at low altitude, giving parachutes less than 3 seconds to fully deploy, which is why precision and timing are everything. A “human launch” style exit, where one jumper uses another as a platform before separating mid-air, reduces that already tiny margin even further. The peace sign on the way down suggests she was never worried for a single second. (Via Collab) #basejump #extreme

Threading the needle at 120 mph: When human flight requires absolute perfection. What happened: Dropping off a massive cliff, this BASE jumper doesn't just fall—they pilot. Utilizing a high-performance wingsuit, the jumper converts a vertical drop into blinding horizontal speed, soaring over the terrain to hit a pinpoint proximity line. Captured entirely on a 360-degree camera, it’s a masterclass in reading the atmosphere and trusting the equipment. Current outcome: The POV footage is giving the internet intense vertigo. Because it was shot in 360 degrees, you don't just see the ground rushing by; you feel the sheer velocity and the terrifying lack of space between the pilot and the rock face. It’s a flawless demonstration of turning a human body into a precision glider. Why it matters: In proximity BASE jumping, the margin for error is exactly zero. Flying lines like this requires years of skydiving experience, elite spatial awareness, and a "flow state" where the pilot's micro-movements dictate life or death. It proves that with the right physics and absolute mental focus, humans really can fly. Please DM for removal of your content if you're the rightful owner of the clip. However, we glorify the heroes like you. #BaseJumping #Wingsuit #ProximityFlying #AdrenalinBase #SquirrelWS PeopleAreAwesome

On July 16, 2022, Ukrainian professional skydiver and BASE jumper Maxim Slobodian, known online as “Maximignite,” lost his life during a wingsuit jump from the Sputnik launch site above Lake Walenstadt in Switzerland. Slobodian was a highly experienced athlete with over 8,100 jumps, known for his fearless precision and viral stunts that showcased the limits of human flight. Witnesses reported that his final jump began smoothly, but he failed to deploy his parachute at the proper altitude. His body was later recovered from the lake, marking a tragic end to a career that inspired both awe and reflection. The incident reignited global discussion about the dangers of wingsuit BASE jumping — a sport admired for its freedom yet infamous for its fatality rate. Despite the risks, Slobodian had often spoken about his passion for pushing boundaries, mentoring newcomers, and accepting the price of the pursuit. His videos now stand as a haunting reminder of the thin line between mastery and mortality.

As for getting spread like jam on a jagged mountain side that is the risk you take with BASE jumping. That is why it’s so powerful. You face death knowing if you make a mistake it will cost you everything. No second chances, no do overs. Once you take that step there is no coming back. It will change you as a human being. Life would be utterly meaningless if you lived on past death. Nothing any of us do would have meaning. Death is what makes life matter. It makes every moment you get special because you will never get it back. Realizing this will make you appreciate the people you love so much more. It helps you let go of petty bickering. All of a sudden you want the moments with your parents, siblings and friends to be happy moments. You never know how much time you will get so you don’t want to waste it fighting over nonsense. There was an infinite amount of time before you were born and there will be an infinite amount of time after you die. That short time you get to exist is remarkable. It is special. You are the universe experiencing itself for a short blink of time and it’s amazing.

@explainingmistakes
Skydiving or BASE jumping near cliffs is extremely dangerous because there’s almost no room for mistakes. When you’re close to rock faces, even a small loss of control, sudden wind shift, or delayed parachute opening can send someone directly into the cliff. Cliffs also create unpredictable air currents. Wind can bounce, swirl, or suddenly change direction near mountains and rock walls, making movement much harder to control than open-air skydiving. BASE jumping from cliffs is especially risky because the jump starts so low compared to normal skydiving. There’s far less time to react if something goes wrong with the parachute or body position. That’s why these sports are considered some of the most dangerous extreme activities in the world. One small error near a cliff can become fatal almost instantly.

In 1999, experienced BASE jumper Jan Davis participated in a protest against the National Park Service’s ban on BASE jumping at Yosemite National Park. The demonstration aimed to showcase the sport’s safety when performed by trained professionals. Davis and four other jumpers planned to leap from El Capitan, with the first three completing successful jumps. For her attempt, Davis used borrowed equipment to avoid potential confiscation by park authorities. This unfamiliar gear had critical differences from her usual setup - most notably, the ripcord was mounted on the leg strap rather than in the standard back position she typically used. During her jump, Davis failed to locate and deploy the parachute in time, resulting in a fatal impact. The accident occurred despite her extensive experience, with investigators concluding the unfamiliar equipment configuration contributed significantly to the tragedy. The incident remains a frequently cited case in debates about BASE jumping regulations and equipment standardization. While the protest continued after Davis’s death, the National Park Service maintained its ban on BASE jumping in national parks. (Note: Details are drawn from National Park Service investigation reports and 1999 media coverage from the Fresno Bee and San Francisco Chronicle.)
