DROH⁻ vs SH⁻ — which is more basic?
Many students say SH⁻ because sulfur is less electronegative
But the correct answer is: OH⁻ is MORE BASIC
Why?
Basicity depends on how tightly the negative charge is held
Oxygen is smaller → holds charge tightly → more reactive → stronger base
Sulfur is larger → charge spreads out → more stable → weaker base
Shortcut for exams:
Down a group → size ↑ → basicity ↓
So:
OH⁻ > SH⁻ (in basicity)
⚠️ Important trap:
Don’t confuse basicity with acidity
(H₂S is more acidic, but SH⁻ is a weaker base!)
