We were absolutely shocked.. 🤯 Have you ever seen a Basking Shark breach before? 🦈 We spent 13 hours sitting at Loop Head in Clare watching and trying to capture this extremely rare behaviour, there is very very little footage of this behaviour online! It was an absolute privilege to watch and we were absolutely buzzing when we finally got the shot! 👀 We applied and received full permission from the Irish Park and Wildlife Service to capture this footage of the Basking Sharks 📃 Follow up post coming 👀

Sharks off the coast of Ireland 🇮🇪 I was blessed to spot these beautiful creatures off the west coast of Ireland. The basking shark is the second largest fish in the world, after the whale shark. Basking sharks are filter feeders that eat tiny, planktonic prey. Reaching lengths of 40 feet (12 m) and resembling predatory sharks in appearance, the basking shark can give an intimidating impression, but they are quite harmless. They spend most of their time near the surface, swimming with their extraordinarily large mouths open, filtering out their preferred prey, but they may also make deeper, feeding dives. Hello again! 🦈👋 Yesterday we spotted this sweet little female basking shark around the Isle of Coll. I've been out at sea looking for basking sharks since July, which is why I'm a little slower than usual at doing just about everything else. When we take sightings data on basking sharks one of the things we are looking at is scarring. You can see this female has interesting markings on the ventral side of her head, this made her easy to recognise again as this was an unusual marking! (You may recognise her from my last video!) I wonder what caused it, an itchy chin perhaps? 🤷‍♀️ I'm not sure there's anything 'menacing' about this plankton eating beauty, it's not the first time basking sharks have caused a bit of hysteria in the news simply for swimming by. These endangered sharks grace our waters each summer, they can often be seen at the surface feeding on plankton as this little lady is doing here.
