Here’s everything we’ve learnt after applying 100 litres of limewash… 1: You MUST prime & prep your walls using @bauwerkcolour ‘Prep Coat’. Trust us when we say that the limewash does not spread properly without this! If like us, you have freshly plastered walls, they will first need sealing first using two coats of primer (we used Crown Covermatt), and then one coat of Bauwerk’s Prep coat. 2: We cannot emphasise how important it is to stir the limewash often. Because it’s a natural product with no binders and chemicals (just pigment and water), it separates within a few minutes. Ideally, you want to be giving the limewash a quick stir between every other dip of your brush. 3: The natural brushes from Bauwerk can hold A LOT of limewash and it’s easy to overload them with paint. To prevent this, only dip them approx 1/4 of the way in, and give a few flicks of the wrist to remove the excess. It should not be dripping with paint when you come to apply. 4: Start the clouds on your second coat in between the joins of the clouds of your first coat. I.e. Don’t start a cloud directly on top of where a previous one is, as you’ll lose the textured effect. 5: Don’t overwork already painted areas. It can be tempting to re-do a cloud because of the visible brush strokes and patchiness. As long as you spread the paint outwards in all directions, you’ll be fine. 6: Be sure to really spread the limewash as far as it goes using gentle, easy, but firm strokes. It will surprise you how far the paint goes. You want to make sure you have a nice coverage with both your 1st and 2nd coats, with no gaps with undercoat visible. The best advice we can give? Honestly, try not to overthink everything. Trust the process, have fun with it, and remember the 3 P’s - PRIME, PREP and PAINT. How to limewash using @bauwerkcolour in 4 easy steps. 1. Fill any holes or blemishes. As with most walls, some preparation is needed. Use normal filler to cover any holes or wall imperfections. Sand until smooth. 2. Preparation. If you are painting over an existing painted wall or plastered wall, you’ll need to seal it first. The best product I’ve used has been @crownpaintsuk CoverMatt. Give all areas you want to limewash 2 good coats. CoverMatt also works perfectly on MDF and wood, so great for tv units, plinths and skirtings too! 3. Limewash Prep Coat. This is done so that the limewash can work well with the walls to create that cloud like effect. You can either apply 1 or 2 coats of this to the walls and areas you wish to limewash, if you got good coverage with the first coat, a second shouldn’t be needed. 4. Limewash. This is where you can get artistic! Create cloud/star like clusters of paint, stretching the paint on the brush outwards. Repeat the process with clusters overlapping. Once the room is complete. Redo the process all over with clusters in different areas to create a unique textured effect. Do’s and Dont’s: Do: Mix the Bauwerk limewash paint often to ensure the paint and limewash are an even consistency. I found using a large whisk makes this easy to do. Don’t: Be tempted to fill paint into areas that look unpainted. Fix this on your second coverage as you redo the wall. Do: Ensure the walls are prepped correctly. If you do not seal and prime the walls correctly, areas such as filler will show through the paint. So take your time to cover areas well with CoverMatt. 2 coats is a must. If this does happen, you’ll have to repeat the process from stage 2. Do: Give the walls time to settle, it can take upto 2 weeks for the paint to fully dry and absorb, so you’ll find it slowly change over time and only get better! I wanted to show you how different they look in the light the bedroom! This is why I wanted to sample them in here too & share the process! When applying limewash samples to the wall it’s so important to have your wall prepped properly (2 coats of primer 1 coat of @bauwerkcolour prep coat) Then with a soft brush & properly mixed paint apply a large sample cloud. Just a tip to let each layer dry throughly as from wet to dry they will always dry lighter… Which colour do you love guys? It was honestly so easy to add a limewash feature wall to our bedroom. Starting with our existing painted plasterboard walls, these are the steps it took to paint a feature wall with limewash paint. I used @bauwerkcolour for this project. Step 1: I taped off the side walls and ceiling of the feature wall. Step 2: I applied one coat of the bauwerk prep coat by roller to my wall. Step 3: I stirred the limewash paint really well to make sure the pigment completely mixed and worked with about 10cm of paint at a time (stirring regularly). I applied to the wall in rough, cloud like patterns using the limewash block paint brush. Step 4: I waited overnight to apply the second coat of limewash paint. And voila! I am so in love with the depth and warmth this wall added to our bedroom. The only thing I would change if I did it again, is perhaps layer with another colour to try and add an even more textured look! Who’s going to give this a go?
