Tips for a new Behavior Analyst (BCBA) 📝 •Always carry a healthy level of skepticism. Even “evidence-based practices” shouldn’t be taken at face value (I’ll discus further on another post). •Be open to new research and new perspectives ABA has evolved from the days of rigid Behavior Modification methods and it’s important that as clinicians, we are always looking to evolve as well. •Collaborate with other disciplines, keep a pulse on what is working and what isn’t, and use the foundational knowledge you’ve acquired in behavior science to shape your own therapeutic approach. While Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is a valuable tool in learning, it's overused and there are other effective teaching methods. DTT has its place, but it shouldn't dominate services. DTT's structured approach can be beneficial for teaching specific skills, especially when breaking down complex behaviors into smaller, manageable steps. It's particularly useful for children who struggle with attention; however, relying too heavily on DTT can lead to: 1. Limited generalization of skills 2. Decreased spontaneity and initiation 3. Overreliance on prompts and reinforcers 4. Reduced natural social interactions We need to embrace a more balanced approach that incorporates other evidence-based strategies: Natural Environment Training (NET): NET focuses on teaching skills in real-life contexts, promoting generalization and spontaneous use of learned behaviors. It capitalizes on the child's interests and motivation, making learning more engaging and meaningful. NET helps bridge the gap between structured sessions and everyday life, ensuring skills are truly functional, plus DTT can be incorporated into NET settings. Relational Frame Theory/Training (RFT) and derived relational responding: RFT-based interventions target the development of language and cognition by focusing on relational skills. This approach can enhance problem-solving abilities, perspective-taking, and complex language understanding. By incorporating RFT principles, we can foster more flexible and adaptive thinking in learners. Other important approaches to consider: - Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) - Incidental teaching - Video modeling - Social narratives We need tailor our services to each individual's needs, preferences, and learning style. This means utilizing a variety of teaching methods and continuously assessing their effectiveness, including listening to the learner's preferences. Let's move beyond the overreliance on DTT and embrace a more comprehensive, naturalistic, and socially valid approach to learning. What are your thoughts on balancing DTT with other teaching methods? Share your experiences and insights below! #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #bcba #rbt

Practicing with compassion means demonstrating patience and modeling calmness while treating individuals with respect and dignity. It is important to train clinicians on how to respond proactively to crisis situations in order to ensure safety and supportive environments. Lack of training can create hazardous situations for both clinicians and children, resulting in poor practices. This often contributes to the negative perceptions of the application of Behavior Analysis in children on the Autism Spectrum. Severe behavior can be influenced by many factors beyond the scope of ABA. Therefore, coordinating care with other professionals and adopting a multidisciplinary approach is essential. However, one thing we can control during therapy is our method, ensuring it is rooted in compassion and understanding. 🚨Disclaimer: This video has been shared with the consent of the child’s parent for training purposes. I’ve had many different jobs since I started in the field of ABA 13 years ago, but honestly - what I’m doing now feels the most like “me.” ✅ I get to help people in a hands-on way. ✅ I’m never bored. ✅ I get to set my own schedule & have full clinical control. ✅ There’s no stupid insurance company telling me how to do my job or how often I can do it. ✅ I get great work-life balance. ✅ I can choose to focus on different side jobs and pull back on others as my interests & availability changes. Diversifying my income stream has been a slow but vital process in increasing my earnings AND job satisfaction. #Bcba #boardcertifiedbehavioranalyst #aba #abaoutsideautism #nontraditionalbcba #nontraditionalaba

Find an ABA provide that cares 🫶 Old ABA focused heavily on compliance, rigid protocols, and high-intensity hours, often without considering the individual’s autonomy. New ABA prioritizes a more compassionate, client-centered approach—emphasizing autonomy, assent, naturalistic teaching, and fading services to build true independence. It’s about supporting, not controlling. There are so many directions you can take with a BCBA certification. While most BCBAs work with individuals with autism, the scope of behavior analysis is much broader. From organizational behavior management to UX design, education, healthcare, and even content creation, your skills are more versatile than you think. You don’t have to follow the traditional path. You can create your own. What’s one direction you’d love to explore with your certification? #BCBA #BehaviorAnalysis #BeyondAutism #BCBAlife #ABAcareer #OBM #bcbaentrepreneur

⚡️ happy World Behavior Analysis Day What kind of BCBA are you?? Basically I am a school based BCBA who is compassionate and trauma informed, I love my greens, and prioritize keeping my learners happy relaxed and engaged. I like to problem solve as a team and show flexibility in my plans. I focus on reinforcing the adult behaviors as they implement plans and model for them as much as possible. I always try to get to the root of the problem while prioritizing safety for everyone. NOT I am not clipboard and data obsessed, I don’t focus on compliance and robotic responses or implementation, I don’t believe my learners should do things just because I said so and my plans are not a one size fits all type of plan. I don’t believe in yelling at learners, and I won’t make you figure it out on your own. I’m not a my way or the highway type of BCBA who believes in punishment procedures over reinforcement, and I most likely won’t tell you to ignore the child it’s just for attention. #schoolbasedbcba #bcba #behavioranalyst #behaviorinschools #worldbehavioranalysisday #worldbehavioranalysisday2025 #behavioranalysis #behaviorspecialist #specialeducationteacher #education #bcbalife #lifeofabcba #proudtobeabehavioranalyst

Three things to remember for giving effective instructions 1. Never assume your child or student knows what you want. What feels like common sense to adults often isn’t always obvious to kids. 2. Following instructions is something kids learn by doing, not by being told once. Walking them through what the instruction looks like, practicing it together, and responding in the moment (feedback or reinforcement)  gives them a real opportunity to get it right and experience success. 3. Tell them what TO do, not just what to NOT do. Avoid instructions that rely on “no” or “don’t” statements. These don’t give kids any information about what behavior you’d like to see. For example, instead of “stop kicking,” try “put your feet on the floor.” Instead of “don’t interrupt,” try “if you need me, you can say ‘excuse me’ when you want to talk.” P.S. If we haven’t met yet—hi! I’m Jenna. I’m a behavior analyst, teacher, and mom. I started this account to help parents and educators with practical, evidence-based strategies that actually work, so you can enjoy more peaceful days without constant power struggles. So if you’re looking for real-life, easy-to-follow tips (without the fluff), you’re in the right place! #bcba #behavior #parentsofinstagram
