I usually don’t like the advice to “just be positive.” But sometimes, it makes sense. It all depends on how you define “positive.” Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean you’re blindly optimistic. It’s actually strategic & growth-focused, what research calls an “optimistic explanatory style.” You don’t ignore reality. You’re pragmatic, rational. AND, you reframe unhelpful thoughts to focus on growth. This technique is called ‘cognitive reframing,’ based on principles of the cognitive model of behavior. Here’s how you can apply it: BEFORE a big moment, shift from self-doubt to preparation: → How can I best prepare? → What can I offer that adds value? AFTER a setback, use growth-oriented questions: → What can I learn from this? → How could I approach it differently next time? This technique helps you create mental space to turn challenges into opportunities. It helps you face obstacles with resilience and stay focused on progress. My 3 non-negotiables ⬇️ I post a lot about studying, my business, and other productivity things, and so many people have asked how I’m able to get so much done. How do I stay focused? How do you achieve so much? How do you never get distracted? The truth is… I’m no different to you. I used to procrastinate, get distracted, stress out over work. This is completely normal and you aren’t alone in facing these things. However, over the years, I’ve discovered a handful of ways to keep myself on task, and have a clear system to use every day, centred around 3 non-negotiables: 1️⃣ Exercise every single morning Usually I go to the gym, sometimes I run… either way I try to get my heart rate up in some way as this wakes me up and gives me so much energy for the day. 2️⃣ No social media before 12pm This is a big one that I’ve only started recently. I know just how much of an impact scrolling has on my energy and focus, so I save it until I’ve gotten my highest priority work done for the day. 3️⃣ Get ready every day Get dressed. Brush my teeth. Do skincare. If I don’t do these things, my mind assumes today is a rest day and I know I won’t get anything meaningful done. The more decisions one has to make earlier in the day (e.g. what to eat for breakfast, what to wear and what how to start the day), the less brainpower they have to apply to future decision-making, resulting in a decrease in decision-making ability later in the day (often referred to as ‘ego depletion’ or ‘decision fatigue’). Many of most successful business leaders and peak performers understand this principle, so reduce the number of ‘trivial’ decisions they make each day. They ‘routinize’ themselves to free up cognitive power for the important decisions. ACTION: Apply this principle by ‘simplifying’ the decisions you make each day. You can start with the following: -Have a work-wardrobe where you’ve paired items of clothing. -Do your groceries on the same day each week. -Have a meal routine where you know what you’ll eat each day of the week. -Create a morning routine you repeat each work day.
