I’m sick and tired of the media, as well as Todd Loewen & friends, portraying bears as vicious monsters. They use pictures of bears with their mouth wide open, showing their teeth like they’re out for blood. When have you ever seen a bear like that? I sure haven’t. After living in bear country for the last 5 years, I have had the privilege of seeing many black and grizzly bears. This is their home. The more you are in the presence of bears, the more you learn they aren’t the big scary creatures some people want us to believe. I have fallen in love with bears in the last 5 years, so much so that I now work for a scientific organization that is conserving the world’s 8 bear species. I have come to learn that bears are incredibly tolerant of humans. Bears are patient - they are just out here trying to survive and we humans decided to invite ourselves into their homes, walk all over it, in hoards, at all hours of the day and night. And they just let us. We barely respect their space and they show so much restraint. We don’t deserve bears. Bears are critical in supporting healthy and diverse environments. Without them, our forests would suffer, and entire ecosystems would decline. Despite what Todd Loewen & friends want you to think, grizzly bears are a THREATENED species in Alberta. We need to protect them before it’s too late. Grizzly bears used to roam from Alaska all the way to Mexico, and as far east as the Hudson Bay. Why don’t they exist there any more? One word: humans. Let’s not let grizzlies (or any bear) lose any more critical habitat. Be a voice for nature. Be a voice for wildlife. A few weeks ago I visited a bear bile farm in South Korea with @spaceforthewild. Moon Bears have been cruelly exploited for the extraction of their bear bile for years for the oriental medicine industry. This very family that we visited have never seen anything beyond small, dirty, metal cages where they have received the most inhumane treatment anyone could imagine. BEAR League is pleased to finally introduce one of our other Mama Bears who gave birth under a cabin at Lake Tahoe this winter. You met Rose (and her triplets: Storm, Oakley and Echo) a couple of weeks ago and we’ll share more footage of them soon—be prepared, they have really grown! This is Ursula and her twins: Polaris and Arcturus. As with Rose’s upstairs room-mate (the human who lives in the cabin she lives under) the good folks upstairs from Ursula are super kind and tolerant of the noise and possible damage and they admit to accidentally leaving the crawl space door open. Once a Mama Bear gives birth in a crawl space, she can’t legally be evicted because her tiny newborn cubs would perish. Our BEAR League CubCam Team installs custom made camera gear after we crawl under to determine exactly what is going on. We are pleased to be able to share footage with you but keep in mind, we do Not advocate for homeowners to invite bears to den under their homes and cabins. It’s not natural and the bears can often cause a tremendous amount of damage while they are there for several months. It can also be dangerous for the bears due to electrical wires, gas pipes etc. Allow us to once again say: Please Secure Your Crawl Spaces Before a Bear Discovers the ‘Den’ Underneath.
