BEBefore FaceTime and Zoom calls became part of everyday life, Marian Croak helped build the technology that made them possible.
Meet Marian Croak, the engineer whose groundbreaking work in Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, helped turn internet-based voice and video communication into something practical, reliable, and usable at scale. The National Inventors Hall of Fame credits her work with helping make audio and video conferencing a reality.
While working at AT&T Labs, Croak led major advances in the technology that enables voice to travel as digital signals over the internet rather than traditional phone lines. That shift changed how people connect across distance and laid the groundwork for the kinds of calls now made every day on platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, and other internet-based calling services.
Her impact is massive. Croak holds more than 200 U.S. patents, and her work helped make remote communication more dependable long before the rest of the world realized how badly we would need it.
She helped make the modern way we talk to each other possible.
