Set yourself up for the next day. If you are not super hungry in the AM or have early morning training, a bedtime snack helps top off your tank & start the next day strong 💪🏻 3. Consuming casein found in milk, cottage cheese & Greek yogurt before bed may help with muscle recovery & growth and improve sleep. Here are my thoughts… When it comes to bedtime snacks, they should be “always or never” (i.e. don’t serve a snack only if they don’t eat their dinner). If served it should be a ‘BBS’- a Boring Bedtime Snack and not super exciting foods. Such as apple slices or cubed cheese. Why? Bedtime snacks can become problematic when they replace or undermine dinner, like when a child skips the meal and waits for a preferred snack instead. This can happen if dinner options are consistently unappealing or foods are too challenging for them. Not to mention, bedtime snacks may be used as delay tactics to avoid bedtime if not done properly 🫠🤯 Important note: You also want to avoid using bedtime snack as a reward or punishment linked to dinner, as this can create pressure and unhealthy associations with eating. Should you give your kids a bedtime snack? ⬇️ Depends! The answer isn’t black and white. It’s about finding a balance between making sure your kids know they have access to food when their body tells them they’re hungry, and not completely catering to every request, especially when they wind up holding out for a snack instead of eating dinner. We recently discussed bedtime snacks as a family because my kids were driving me nuts with all the requests once they were in bed. I want my kids to eat and feel like they have access to food, but I don’t love going up and down the stairs 500 times to fulfill their snack and whatever else they need requests. So we put the kabosh on that and did two things: ☝🏼 we try to have a consistent bedtime snack before bed roughly an hour after dinner where they sit down and eat 2-3 different food groups. ✌🏼 as a family we came up with a few simple and boring bedtime snacks for those “I’m still hungry” at 9 PM nights. These include banana, apple slices (or other fruit that’s not super messy, cheese stick, yogurt pouch, or graham crackers. Implementing these two things have drastically helped with the frustration around bedtime! What’s your go-to bedtime snack for your kids if you have one? THE SNACK THAT HELPS KIDS SLEEP BETTER 😴 🍒 🛏️ 💤 ✅ Tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin ✅ Flax and pumpkin seeds support relaxation ✅ Hemp seeds for healthy fats & protein ✅ Cinnamon to keep blood sugar levels steady TART CHERY CHOCO BALLS ✨1 cup dried tart cherries ✨1 cup organic rolled oats ✨1/2 cup nut butter or sunflower seed butter ✨1/4 cup raw honey or organic maple syrup ✨1/4 cup pumpkin seeds ✨1/4 cup dark chocolate chips ✨2 tbsp ground flax seed ✨1 tbsp hemp seeds ✨1/2 tsp cinnamon ✨1/4 tsp salt Combine everything in a bowl (add a little more nut butter or honey if too dry). Roll into balls, then let them set in the fridge for 1 hour. We like to let our daughter eat a couple of these after dinner, about an hour before going to bed.
