Propolis, what is it and what's it for. Propolis is a mixture of resins collected from local trees and plants, which means no two apiaries produce quite the same material. It is a reflection of landscape and forage, these hives are sited inside a mature pine copse and the propolis is thick and bright orange/red. Inside the colony, propolis is mixed with wax and enzymes and acts as a structural and hygienic material. It smooths surfaces, seals cracks, reduces draughts, and helps create a stable internal environment for developing bees. In effect, it is part of the colony’s long-term medicine cupboard, a hygienic tool rather than a food, contributing to overall colony health. So good are its antibacterial properties that when larger intruders enter the hive and cannot be removed, bees may encase them in propolis, preventing decay and contamination. @backyardbeescornwall had a great picture of a propolised mouse yesterday. For humans propolis has been valued for centuries for its complex natural chemistry, with naturally occurring bioactive compounds, particularly rich in flavonoids and aromatic resins. I love the latin name pro polis = meaning defence of the city. Many people choose to include propolis tincture in their routines because it is regarded as a supportive, traditional product with a centuries long history of human use in apothecary , promoting good health, oral and skin care. Id like to make a toothpaste for its ability to whiten teeth. I use our propolis tincture every day, in the evenings added to warm water, stem ginger and a spoon of honey. It smells like the memory of opening a hive on a hot summers day. I know it sounds silly but it really makes me feel close to the bees as it triggers such memories of working hives which like many beekeepers, Im missing terribly at the moment. If you live in Cornwall and visit any of the farmers markets and events we attend have a look out for us, @therescuedbee and pick up a bottle of 2025 season propolis tincture made solely by us with propolis from our own hives. #propolis #beekeeping #beehive

See the bees working the edges of the box? They’re collecting propolis. Sometimes new beekeepers are told to scrape every bit of propolis off their frames… but propolis isn’t just glue. It’s the hive’s medicine. Antimicrobial. Antiviral. Protective. The bees know what they’re doing.

Propolis — often called “bee glue” — has been treasured for thousands of years. The Egyptians used it in mummification, the Greeks and Romans valued it for wound care, and traditional healers across cultures relied on it long before modern labs existed. Bees craft propolis by blending tree resins with wax and enzymes to seal and protect their hives, creating a natural barrier against bacteria and invaders. It’s the colony’s shield — strong, resilient, and time-tested. From forest resin to hive medicine, propolis carries the quiet wisdom of the bees and the endurance of tradition. #Propolis #BeeGlue #BeekeepingLife #HoneyBee #NaturalWellness #HiveLife #AncientRemedies #BeeProducts #FromTheHive #TraditionalWisdom #Apiculture #SustainableLiving

We gently open this stingless bee (Trigona) hive and immediately see the top layer sealed with propolis — a natural resin collected from plants. Propolis helps protect the colony from bacteria, fungi, and unwanted intruders. Inside the hive, the honey pots are at different stages of development. Some are fully filled and ready, some are partially filled, and others are still under construction by the worker bees. This variation is a strong sign of an active and healthy colony. You can see constant movement, organized structure, and ongoing production — a living system working in perfect coordination. Every pot represents teamwork. Every layer of propolis represents protection. A balanced hive is a powerful example of how intelligent and efficient nature truly is. 🐝 Would you like to see a closer look at the honey pots? #RawHoney #NatureLovers #SatisfyingVideo #BeeKeeping

This substance on the hind leg of a honeybee is not pollen, it’s called propolis. Propolis is tree sap that the bees collect and bring home to the hive and they add their own enzymes to it. It’s a powerful antiviral. Just like the rare sight of a honeybee with wax coming out of its glands, it’s also rare to spot honeybees with propolis on their hind legs! I’ve seen propolis many more times than wax. I haven’t seen how they remove it from each other though.. It’s like the stickiest thing ever, especially when it’s warm. I would love to witness the removal of propolis and see them working it into cracks in the hive or spaces between frames. Has anyone seen bees remove propolis before? #propolis #honeybee

Ever heard of propolis? It's one of the natural products that honey bees create in the course of taking care of their hive, and it is harvested by beekeepers and used in natural throat remedies. You should try some 😋

Propolis is a sticky, resin-like substance that honey bees make by mixing plant resins with beeswax and saliva, then use as a kind of glue and disinfectant inside the hive. Bees use it to seal cracks, smooth interior surfaces, regulate airflow, and create an antimicrobial barrier that helps protect the colony from pathogens and small invaders. For humans, propolis is harvested in small amounts from hives and is sold in tinctures, capsules, and creams, where it is marketed for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing support, though the strength of scientific evidence varies by use.

Sitting next to this hive today, I observed the foragers bringing in nectar & propolis. Just a few days ago, it was all pollen & nectar. It made me wonder why propolis? Was it because I broke their propolis seals by opening and shifting boxes? Is it because it will be cold again in a few days? Are they seeking out medicine?
