STBackyard bees really aren’t as complicated as they seem. I’m still a new beekeeper, but once your hive is set up and you learn how to do a hive check every 1–2 weeks, it becomes part of your normal backyard routine — like watering the garden or turning the compost.
I went with the Flow Hive Hybrid and genuinely love it. It has mostly traditional wooden frames (which are great for learning and understanding your colony) with the bonus of a few Flow frames for easy honey collection. And it’s a lot more cost-effective than going with a full Flow hive.
A few beginner tips that helped me:
• Learn what a healthy brood frame should look like
• Add space before the bees feel crowded
• Keep an eye out for small hive beetles early
• Hive checks don’t need to be perfect — aim for 10 minutes
• Choose a spot with morning sun to keep the hive happy
