They didn’t ‘hurt’ the child, but the attitude, confrontational & negative shouty women influenced how the young child felt about interacting with the toy! The toys he WAS enjoying with this nicely spoken, & kind woman. Exactly what happens with dogs & why kindness, patience, UNDERSTANDING & positive reinforcement whether human or animals is the most ethical & scientific method of learning & development. Fact! Just because it didn’t ‘hurt’ doesn’t mean it’s ok. Educate yourselves on learning theory, canine & child behaviour, brain development & how it is critical for health & success. There are great similarities between human & animal development & learning ♥️ 2019-2026 Sarah MSc Dog Training & Behaviour©️ #childdevelopment #caninedevelopment #behaviourism #psychology #positivereinforcement

Understanding behaviourist learning theory Have you ever wondered how habits are formed? 🤔 Behaviourist learning theory dives deep into this concept, highlighting how our environment shapes our actions through reinforcement and observation. From classroom settings to everyday life, this theory emphasises that learning is a process of conditioning—whether through rewards or consequences. Let's explore how this impacts our growth and interactions! #LearningTheory #Behaviourism #EducationMatters #Psychology #GrowthMindset

Traditional parenting didn’t come from bad intentions— It came from survival, war, control, trauma… and behaviourism. To move forward consciously, we must understand where these patterns came from. 🔩 Industrialisation (late 1700s – early 1900s) Children were expected to be obedient, quiet, and productive—mirroring the factory systems their parents worked in. Parenting became about efficiency and compliance, not connection. 🎖️ Post-War Trauma (WWI & WWII) Many fathers returned home with untreated trauma and brought military-style discipline into the home: strict rules, corporal punishment, emotional suppression. Mothers, often emotionally isolated themselves, were expected to “keep children in line.” There was no space for emotional expression—only obedience, toughness, and silence. ⛪ Religious Influence Christian doctrine in Australia and globally “Spare the rod, spoil the child” became a justification for physical punishment and emotional control—all in the name of love. 🧪 Behaviourism: Pavlov & Skinner Starting in the early 1900s, Ivan Pavlov (classical conditioning) and B.F. Skinner (operant conditioning) introduced the idea that behaviour could be trained through rewards and punishments—like dogs or lab rats. This scientific lens stripped out emotion. Parenting became focused on shaping "good" behaviour, not understanding emotion. Time-outs, sticker charts, smacking, and gold stars all emerged from this model. Children were conditioned to behave, not supported to feel. And emotional expression—especially crying, anger, or “talking back”—was seen as bad behaviour to extinguish. 🔬 What We Know Now: The Science of Connection 🧠 Neuroscience Children’s brains are shaped by connection, not correction. Emotional safety builds the prefrontal cortex—where empathy, problem-solving, and regulation live. Punishment shuts it down. Repeated emotional invalidation wires shame, not resilience. 🫀 Polyvagal Theory (Dr Stephen Porges) The nervous system is wired for connection and co-regulation. Safety leads to learning. Fear leads to fight, flight, or freeze. We don’t need to scare kids into obedience—we need to help them feel safe-continued in comments

I taught some teens the principles of behaviourism in a skills group this evening. Solid perk in understanding the concepts of reinforcement and behaviour change is being able to train your dog to do things like this so you don’t have to go open the door for the cat (who is determined to find mischief anywhere he can 😂). Sloan’s currency for rewards is praise, she doesn’t give a hoot about treats so immediate “good girls” and excitement are the positive reinforces that I use for any of her training! Also, they are bffs and bring each other so much joy it is hilarious. Quite the pair. #yycpsychology #cochranepsychology #yyctherapist #cochranetherapist #yycmentalhealth #cochranementalhealth #cochranealberta #cochrane #cochranewellness #mindfulness #cochranetherapy #maliyawellnesscentre#dbttherapy #dbt #calgarypsychology #teenpsychology #childpsychology #behaviourism #behaviorism #positivereinforcement #behaviourchange
