ITIf the Precipice Trail looks a little intimidating, start with Beehive Trail 🐝 — it’s the perfect warm-up hike.
Short, steep, and packed with views that make your heart race in the best way.
Tips before you go:
🌅 Start early — this trail gets busy fast, and parking at Sand Beach fills up.
👟 Wear shoes with good grip — the granite gets slippery when wet.
💧 Bring plenty of water and a snack for the top — the climb’s short but intense.
🐾 Leave the pups at home — no dogs allowed on the iron rungs.
☀️ Avoid hiking right after rain or in fog — the ledges can be slick.
The whole loop’s about 1.5 miles with a 450-ft elevation gain, and it’ll give you a taste of what to expect before tackling Precipice.

WHOne of my FAVORITE trails! 🐝
Beehive Trail in Acadia National Park is so much fun to do. It’s challenging but more so a challenge of the mind. I’ll take this over switch backs any day! lol.
I was super nervous to do this trail again because I had just fainted a few days prior to this. Luckily, I was hiking with a medically trained guide with @goodtripadventures so I felt much safer. Funny enough, 3 other folks in this small group (including the guide) were paramedics too so I was super safe! Haha!
The best part about hiking with Good Trip Adventures is having lunch waiting for you afterwards lol. Perfect after a challenging hike! They have day tours at several National Parks, including Acadia.
There are several other ladder trails but they are closed due to nesting season. I can’t wait to go back and explore more!

🐝⛰️The Beehive Trail is a 1.4-mile loop trail and one of the park's most popular but challenging hikes. The trail ascends a steep cliff face with exposed edges, and it includes iron rungs and ladders in many sections 🪜
🏖️🌊The hike begins at the Sand Beach parking lot. The first section of the trail is relatively easy, but it quickly gets steeper and more challenging. As you climb, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and the Gulf of Maine 🏞️
🪜🥵The most challenging section of the trail is the final climb to the summit of the Beehive mountain. This section includes iron rungs and ladders, and it is exposed on both sides. If you are afraid of heights, this may not be the hike for you 🧗♀️🧗
↘️ The descent from the summit is much easier than the ascent, but it is still important to be careful. The trail is steep and there are loose rocks in some sections.

✨The Precipice Trail is one of the coolest trails in Acadia, and totally worth the hype! But it is also very popular! Here are my best tips:
⏰Get there early! Parking can be tough to find and you may have to walk a bit!
🥾Be prepared! This hike is NOT easy and has dangerous parts! If you are super scared of heights, you may want to reconsider!
💦If it is wet or has recently rained, rethink going on the trail! The exposed rocks and metal rungs can get slippery and falling is the last thing you want to do!
🗺️Know which route you are taking/which way your are going! When we went, I know what I was doing and there was a guard making sure people knew which way to go!
My personal thoughts: it is a beautiful hike and not nearly as scary as some make it out to be. Totally worth it, as it is a unique hike and is supper fun!
✨It is also similar to the more popular Beehive Trail for comparison, and that trail is arguably scarier!
Travel notes:
❄️The park isnt open year round
🦅Sometimes trails can be closed for breeding season (in summer) so if you are coming for this trail, plan ahead accordingly!
🎟️You will need to pay admission or have a parks pass to enter the park, but you don’t need reservations to get here!
Overall, I highly suggest this hike if you love something a little more out there and super beautiful!

📍 Beehive Trail
• 1.5 Miles
• 500 feet Elevation Gain
• Ladders and rock scrambling
This trail is not for the faint of heart! I was regretting my life choices about half way through this trail….
The Beehive trail involves a lot of climbing ladders and rocks and steep exposed cliffs. What is not pictured is the last portion of this trail (the scariest part) because I had to put my camera away, pray and hold on for dear life 😂 I’m very proud of my oldest son for being so brave and constantly reminding me that hard things make you stronger.
I did actually have a moment where I wondered how much it would cost to have someone rescue me from the ledge 😂 But now that I’m safely back on solid ground, I’m glad I did it! Just don’t ask me to do again!

Route Type: out and back
About the hike: This hike leaves from Lake Louie so it’s perfect to watch the sunrise before starting the hike. It’s a steady uphill nearly the entire way and the trail ends at beautiful Lake Agne and the teahouse where you can have coffee and pastries after it opens at 8 AM. The teahouse can get really crowded, so plan to arrive at 8 AM if you don’t want to wait in line. You can also continue on to Big Beehive and the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse from this hike.
