‼️ Bench Press Fail – 4 Broken Ribs ‼️ I’ve been benching for years—it’s my favorite lift. I never thought I’d get one of my worst injuries doing something so routine. But here I am, sitting in the ER with four broken ribs, and it really puts things into perspective. As I sat there, in pain but knowing I’d recover, I looked around at people fighting for their lives—and suddenly, a gym injury didn’t seem so big. But the lesson here is crucial: ✅ Never overlook the basics of spotter safety. ✅ No matter how strong or experienced you are, the basics matter. Some might watch this and think, “There was nothing my spotter could’ve done.” But trust me—a good spotter can mean the difference between walking away and serious injury. Here are 5 spotting rules that could have saved me from this: 1️⃣ Assist with lift-off properly – A controlled start is everything. 2️⃣ Stay engaged – Hands underneath, eyes locked in, no distractions. 3️⃣ Be ready to react – If the bar slows or shakes, step in immediately. 4️⃣ Communicate clearly – Lift-off and rerack cues should be agreed on beforehand. 5️⃣ Never assume they’ve got it – Even the strongest lifters fail. Be ready. I’m not posting this to shame my spotter—we all make mistakes. I’m posting this so NO ONE makes the same one again. Tag your training partners—safety isn’t optional.

Arching your back on bench seems to be a bit controversial. It’s likely because when people think of arching, they automatically picture an extreme powerlifting arch and think it’s dangerous. It’s important to distinguish between a powerlifting arch and a more natural arch. The powerlifting arch is extreme and likely should not be used by most people. Powerlifters use it because it decreases the distance the bar has to travel to reach their chest. They are simply trying to maximize the weight they can lift while abiding by the rules. However, just because you’re not a powerlifter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t arch. You likely shouldn’t use an extreme arch but you should use a more natural arch. When you do, it becomes easier to lock your shoulder blades together as well as stick your chest up so that you avoid internal shoulder rotation and don’t get shoulder impingement. Without arching, it is more difficult to tuck your shoulder blades back and align your chest and shoulders. If your goal is to bench press safely while maximizing the weight you can lift and effectively hit your chest, this is what you should do. #benchpress #chestworkout #benchworkout #benchpressing #flatbench #chestday #chestdayworkout
