DEShe was 92.
Her hands, once strong enough to carry a household, were now translucent like parchment.
I held them, expecting a lecture on saving money or working harder.
Instead, she looked at the photos of us on her bedside table. The only things she was taking with her. and whispered:
“I spent sixty years waiting for permission to be happy.”

and her 60s waiting for a retirement that felt safe enough to finally enjoy.
She looked at me with a clarity that felt like fire and said:
“I treated my life like a rehearsal for a show that never happened. I was so busy being ‘good’ and ‘reliable’ that I forgot to be alive.
Don’t you dare do the same.”
I went home and looked at my business, my cluttered calendar, and my “someday” dreams.
I realized I was doing exactly what she did.
I was waiting for the “perfect time” to be present.
I was waiting for a permission slip that was never going to come in the mail.
I cried for her.
But more than that, I cried for the version of me that was dying before my heart even stopped beating.
