HYDRANGEA PRUNING - Part 2. The second part to my autumn pruning session on this row of 25 blue / purple ball (Mop head) hydrangeas. Please remember this particular cultivar of hydrangea is a late flowering type, which blooms from late Dec through to mid autumn. So your plants may vary with pruning timing and also your location / plant position may affect timing. Happy pruning guys ❤️ AS

Pruning hydrangeas doesn’t have to be confusing ✂️🌿 If you’re growing Hydrangea paniculata or Hydrangea arborescens, they flower on new wood, which means you can cut them back hard in early spring without worrying about losing flowers. In fact, cutting them down to around 30cm encourages: ✔ stronger stems ✔ bigger blooms ✔ a tidier plant This simple prune is one of the easiest ways to get huge hydrangea flowers this summer. Save this so you remember when you’re in the garden ✂️ Follow for simple, jargon-free gardening tips that actually work.

Annabelle hydrangeas are smooth leaf type hydrangeas. Let me show you how to prune them and this pruning method works for other smooth leaf hydrangeas, like Incrediball and Invincibelle. We prune this type of hydrangea in late winter through early spring. There is no risk to cutting off existing flower buds on this type of hydrangea. If your hydrangea has been in its location in the ground for less than four years, we do very minimal pruning, we just deadhead the spent flowers. Make your deadhead cuts above the leaf bud directly under the dead flower. For established Smoothleaf type hydrangeas, you have two different methods you can prune them. One: cut all the existing woody stems all the way down to the ground. This method means the roots will push out brand new stems from the ground, and those new stems will have flowers on the end. Because those stems are brand new, they are very pliable and they will flop a lot. If you want to reduce the amount of flopping, you get try option 2. Option two means you wait until the green leaves come out in the next month. Then you go in and prune any dead flowers off. Cut those stems back to the first green leafy node on the stem. Also cut back any stems that don’t have any green leaves on them all the way to the ground. Where you make your cut, the plant is going to send out brand new stems, and those new stems will have flowers. Those stems are attached to the older, thicker woody stem, which helps keep the flower from flopping to the ground. Both methods are perfectly acceptable. It’s just about preference and what kind of look you are going for. From year to year I change my mind and do different things each year. Have fun with it. Once a smooth leaf hydrangea is established. It’s a very difficult plant to kill so prune away, my friend! #hydrangea #hydrangeas #hydrangealove #hydrangeaseason #annabelle #gardening #garden

Who knew PRUNING was so important? While Annabelles/Incrediballs are low maintenance, pruning is key to promoting large, prolific blooms and a great shape! PRUNING must-knows: When: Late Winter/Early Spring Why: Because Annabelles and Incrediballs bloom on new wood, cutting them at this time encourages more and larger blooms How much: Trim the stems down to 12-18” If you forget to prune, what you end up with are tall, leggy hydrangeas with smaller blooms! #hydrangeas #hydrangeaseason #hydrangealove

Don’t make this mistake with your hydrangeas. Before you prune, make sure you know which type of hydrangea you have growing in your garden. Right now in late winter and early spring many gardeners start pruning hydrangeas, but different types flower on different growth. Some hydrangeas form their flower buds the year before on what’s called old wood. If those stems are cut back now, you may remove the flowers before they ever open. Hydrangeas that usually bloom on old wood include: 🌸 Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) 🌸 Mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) 🌸 Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) Because of that, pruning should be minimal. I usually leave my oakleaf hydrangeas mostly alone unless they need shaping or there is dead growth to remove. For bigleaf hydrangeas, I prefer to wait until the plant fully leafs out before touching it. Once the leaves emerge, it becomes much easier to see which stems are alive and which ones didn’t survive winter. At that point I’ll remove dead stems and clip off old blooms if needed. Reblooming varieties like Endless Summer can bloom on both old and new wood, but the earliest flowers still come from buds that formed the previous season, so I still prune them carefully after the plant fully leafs out. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be pruned in late winter or early spring. These include: 🌸 Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) 🌸 Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) These are the ones I’m pruning back right now. A helpful rule of thumb when pruning hydrangeas is to avoid removing more than about one-third of the plant at a time. Save this post so you remember before pruning your hydrangeas this spring. 🌿🌸

➡️ If your hydrangeas are giving you the silent treatment (aka no blooms)… it might be something you’re doing wrong. Here are 3 mistakes to quit now: 1. ✂️ Cutting them at the wrong time – For bigleaf (macrophylla) and oakleaf types, don’t prune in spring. They bloom on old wood — so snipping in early spring = no flowers. 2. 🌞 Too much sun – They’re not desert plants. Afternoon shade is their best friend, especially in hotter zones. 3. 💧 Light watering – A little sprinkle won’t cut it. Deep, infrequent watering encourages stronger roots and better blooms. 👆 Hydrangeas can thrive with just a few changes. 💾 Save this for next time you’re tempted to grab the pruners! 🌸 Follow @brendoncarroll for garden tips that actually work. 💬 Did you make any of these mistakes before? This can be soooo confusing! I get these questions a lot so I thought I would try to break this all down. Save for later so you can reference it when you need it. I also have a free guide on this in my store. Link above! If you are still confused, better to be safe than sorry and leave them so you don’t cut off the flower buds. However, all of these need at least some pruning. The big leaf ones (macrophylla) can get the tips cut off but it’s not essential. They do sometimes need to be cleaned up: remove dead branches that will get in the way of new growth. The more woody types need to be pruned or they get very unruly and sloppy looking. They can also just outgrow the space. Garden location: client’s house (video done by client) My goal is to empower as many people as possible to get out there and get their hands dirty. If you’re not already, follow along with my clients and my own continuing gardening journey. I’m in zone 6 in the Boston area but almost all of the principles I talk about are applicable to any garden.🌺 #youcandoitgardening #hydrangea #whentoprunehydrangeas #howtoprunehydrangeas #pruning #gardeningtipsforbeginners #gardencoach #gardening #gardens #gardenplanning #gardeningtips #gardening10 #landscapedesign #diygardening #diylandscaping

5 tips to grow GIANT hydrangea: 1. **Proper Location**☀️: Hydrangeas thrive best in partial shade with access to morning sun. The soil should be moist but well-drained. Avoid intense afternoon sunlight. 2. **Pruning**✂️: Prune mophead hydrangeas right after they bloom, and panicle and smooth hydrangeas in early spring. This stimulates new growth and abundant flowering. Remember the type of hydrangea when pruning. 3. **Fertilization**🧪: Use fertilizers rich in phosphorus. Home remedies include eggshells, coffee grounds, and nettle tea. Regular fertilization supports healthy growth and blooming. 4. **Watering**🚿: Hydrangeas need plenty of water, especially during blooming. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. On hot days, water them daily. 5. **Protection from Diseases and Pests**🦠: Regularly check the plants for signs of diseases and pests, and use plant protection products as needed. For prevention, use natural remedies like garlic extract. Maintain plant health to ensure beautiful blooming. Coffe grounds for me is a pro! Pruning hydrangeas: Not all hydrangeas are the same! In my garden, I have Hydrangea arborescens ‘Incrediball,’ which is known for its smooth, oval leaves and massive, globe-shaped white blooms that get stronger each year. I also grow Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight,’ with its striking cone-shaped flowers that emerge green before fading to soft pink in autumn. Now is the perfect time to prune these varieties! Both arborescens and paniculata bloom on new wood, so cutting them back in late winter or early spring encourages bigger, healthier flowers. I like to prune Incrediball hard, say two buds from the ground to keep its shape compact and the stems strong, while Limelight benefits from a lighter prune, removing around a third of its height to maintain structure and encourage fresh growth. Stay tuned for my upcoming reel on how to prune mophead (macrophylla) and lacecap hydrangeas! #Hydrangea #pruninghydrangeas #Annabellehydrangea #limelighthydrangea #incrediball #gardening
